Southampton in 1922 didn't have any principal toll-tree roads suitable for major traffic to the east, and road numbering reflected that - the A27 crossed the Hamble at Botley, as there was no fixed crossing south of there. And the Northam Bridge was narrow and tolled. Because of this, the routes eastwards out of the city centre are 4-digit A roads, which ended at the river. The A33, A3025 and [[B3040
