The A470 is a very important route for traffic through Wales, from the south to the north coast, having mostly being created by renumbering trunk roads that originally had other numbers. Its original route was from the present Cardiff Bay as far as the A40 in Brecon and it was only comparatively recently that it was extended (in stages) to Llandudno. The majority of the route forms the Cardiff to Glan Conwy Trunk Road.
