Before the A9 was extended north in 1935, it was the A88 that went from Inverness to Thurso. Therefore everything north of Inverness was in the 8 zone, and so the road heading north of Dornoch to the A-road at Poles was the B868. With the A9 extension, roads to the east had to be renumbered as part of the 9 zone,
