Toll houses

Post by Glenn A »

Not sure if it fits in here, but there are several former toll houses surviving. The one in the photo is for the former Redheugh Bridge, taken in 1980 when the house and booth were boarded up( the house has since been renovated in the lower photo). Also note the weird 25 mph speed limit, I don't think I've ever encountered this limit before

There's a turnpike in a lovely spot on Parkend Road in the Forest of Dean: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.76809 ... 56!5m1!1e1

Having stayed at Whitemead Forest Park I suspect the owners wish they could install double glazing. That road is a motorbike race track at night.

I think quite a lot survive as private houses. One here on Bridgnorth Road near Stourbridge , and another I came across last month on Old Teignmouth Road, Dawlish.

When the old Redheugh Bridge was demolished, the toll booth and house were converted into two private houses. It's quite interesting going there now as the council estate nearby has been demolished and there are a large number of streets with streetlights and no houses.

There's another not far away at the end of the bridge from Teignmouth to Shaldon.

Another that comes to mind from my A272 road trip a few years ago is this one known as Shipley Paygate. I'd imagine this was once a perfect crossroads with gates extending in two directions from the toll house. According to turnpikes.org.uk, the current house there is Edwardian, the original having been demolished after 1836.
(There might be some more info. in 'A272: An Ode to a Road' - I've lost my copy)!

Sheffield and Langsett Turnpike
You can see the marks on the side of the building where the - what would it be called? - cash desk stuck out into the road.

There are old toll houses all over the place on roads that used to be turnpikes. We even have one in the village of Wheelock here, just up the road from us. If one visits Blists Hill museum near the Iron Bridge, there is a toll house there, and details of how they operated. In a cash-based economy, very great care was needed in guarding the receipts and toll keepers would often have firearms to defend the money ! When one sees the list of tolls one would think there wasn't much cash to worry about, but with agricultural labourers on about ten shillings a week even five pounds is worth stealing. At one time, I believe, when using the old white £5 notes it was expected of you to sign the note, if you looked too impecunious to have one to use !!

Plenty round here, one very close to me (!), one at the bottom of the old Slug Road near Banchory, one at Bervie Braes in Stonehaven, two in Strathdon & another at the south end of the North Esk bridge near Marykirk on the A937.

Sheffield seems to be a hotspot for them - here is the one at Ringinglow.

There is a nice example on the B1042 which I used to drive past every day here.

For those interested there is a comprehensive list on this web site.

The best way to find one is to scroll down to section d) and search by county.

In the second column there are maps of the turnpikes

Looking at that site explains why I don't know of any tollhouses near me. They've either all been demolished or renovated beyond recognition.

Obviously positioned to have a good view of all the approaching roads to avoid anyone sneaking past avoiding payment :cop:

2 i drive past regularly (strangely never noticed the shipley one posted before even though i grew up about 3 miles away)

https://goo.gl/maps/TVvwdW7LgHM2 in Devizes near the top of the Caen hill locks

https://goo.gl/maps/q1ZhzsKcnxS2 A33 on Reading side of Chineham - i am guessing the old course of the road was the other side of the building

I also think this may have been one as when i was growing up the garage opposite was "toll house garage" - https://goo.gl/maps/e5dZTXNbCFt

Barnhill Tollhouse on the A85 heading into Perth from the A90/M90.

It’s in the Buildings at Risk Register :(

It’s actually a 2-storey building, you only see the upper floor from the roadside.
There is a Planning Application to turn it into a house.
