The lay of the land screams "trumpet interchange" to me.
Of course, but isn't the issue future provision for east side access?
An extra bridge taking a road from the western roundabout along the existing stump of Malton Road - replace the roundabout with an NMU friendly junction (e.g. signals) over to the east side still allows for a trumpet without screwing the strategic A64 traffic.
As this requires engineering ability and isn't a roundabout, I expect HE to immediately discard it.

The A64 forms a hard eastern boundary to York, and we've managed up until now without an eastern exit from Hopgrove.
I would suggest no eastern provision should be considered, to avoid opening up for urban sprawl - and in any case, the A166 provides eastward routing.
While I am not convinced that an eastern exit is needed I would suggest that an urban sprawl is more likely to happen inside the York bypass than outside it.

I must admit that when I hastily wrote that I was in the wrong topic. My apologies. I'd been in the M11 J7A topic. I agree with all subsequent posts: nothing planned east of here, and a trumpet it should be.
i remain in favour of a GSJ, whereby through traffic avoids the roundabout and it should be done as part of any extension of the dual carriageway east of York. Do others think that a GSJ is what should ultimately be built at Hop Grove?

Personally yes! But if it’s a choice between dualling and GSJ then dualling is the priority! The Hopgrove while not ideal could cope once the dualling east was completed, in an ideal world both need doing….
In 2017 the A64 Hopgrove Junction was the worst junction in Yorkshire for congestion, with significant congestion occurring on 1000 occasions in that year, that’s quite a claim considering all the motorway junctions in Yorkshire that are very busy, this just shows how bad it is, since then we have had Covid come along and personally my feelings are these tourist routes are going to need more investment than ever, many will work from home now for good and this will have quite an impact on rush hours and commuter traffic on the motorways, but roads like the A64 will continue to see even more traffic with people staying here and going on holiday, the A64 now needs some serious investment…..
Also badly needed is the Rillington Bypass traffic on a Friday evening is often back to Old Malton A169 junction just to get through the village.

Pretty much everyone on here agrees a GSJ is eventually required. The question is whether it's the best option now given a finite budget and that it would mean less DC.
I would like to see a barebones GSJ option worked up - bridge for northbound only, southbound has a freeflow bypass to the left. This kind of thing but with northbound/southbound reversed: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.39133 ... a=!3m1!1e3

This concept is exactly the kind of thing the 1960s "autopont" was designed for. Meccano flyovers have a lot going for them. Then replace with a proper GSJ later.
