The A66 reaches 1500 feet on the Cumbria- Durham border and can also have some spectacular thunderstorms in summer. I can remember driving from Catterick on a very hot, humid day with temperatures hitting 30 degrees and the sky suddenly turning dark to the west of Bowes and a huge thunderstorm with forked lightning lasting all the way to Appleby. Quite frightening as the downhill section turned into a swimming pool, but brilliant to see the sky turn purple and white with the lightning.
