Escape Lanes
Maybe it's living in a fairly level part of the country, but I very rarely see these, and so am genuinely fascinated when I do.
Are there more about than I realise?
Or enough to list?

Airport? What airport?
Aren't there at least two or three on the A2 Jubilee Way in Dover, including one at the terminating roundabout at the bottom of the hill?

A379 descending into Dartmouth has one, just near the Naval college.
I've a vague idea there is/was also one on the A414 St Albans Road in Hemel Hempstead on the hill going down towards the magic roundabout.

The A4 descending towards Bath has one... and Halstead beat me to mentioning Lynmouth Hill (they're just visible between the trees) - I've been down there several times.
To be honest I've never seen "escape lanes" in either Ireland or the UK, but I remember seeing loads of them on the Interstate 70 years ago when my aunt drove me from Denver to Vail in the Rocky Mountains. They were steepish hills veering off the freeway and made of gravel to slow the out of control trucks/cars down.
Certified Roads Geek ... and proud of it!
There's one going northbound on the A380, a mile or so before it merges with the A38, south of Exeter.

Blue Bank on the A169 is the one I always think of.
I have a feeling there might be one on the A166 somewhere between Stamford Bridge and Fridaythorpe, though I'm not sure. Lonewolf will probably know

And I was thinking about escape lanes at the time because I was thinking "what would you do if your throttle was jammed and you couldn't stop?" randomly...

If your in a diesel and turning off the fuel pump hasn't helped (probably got an oil leak into the cylinders) or have a silly computer controlled ignition key system: Jam on the brakes and point at something solid
At Berriedale there is a bit of a drop at the end of the escape pit.

How often do they get used? They always seem quite neglected with dirty sand and quite a lot of litter, which suggests they aren't used or maintained very often; I'd have thought that any maintenance regime would involve e.g. raking the sand so that the surface looked fresh and the sand was properly distributed in order to do its job and so on.
