It comes from the original Roman name - Lindum Colonia. Lindum is from the Celtic meaning a lake by a hill. Colonia is a colony - often land in the occupied territories where retired Roman soldiers could settle. The name of Cologne comes freom the same root. I don't know of any connection with the Rivers Coln(e) in Watford, Colchester, Huddersfield or Gloucestershire.swarkestonecauseway wrote: (second l in Lincoln still bamboozles me)

Re: Lincoln Eastern Bypass
Actually a single grade seperated carriage way would be ok if they dualled and grade seperated the single carriageway sections of the existing Western and northern bypass. Better to spend the money there and on dualling the Newark bypass.
Re: Lincoln Eastern Bypass
There also seems to be an east-west link road planned for the city centre.
How would you like your grade separations, Sir?

Re: Lincoln Eastern Bypass
Now rejected due to a mistake with pedestrian access. Seems a pretty minor reason to throw it out. We will have to wait longer for it now.

Re: Lincoln Eastern Bypass
What this is all about, basically, is that virtually everybody was happy with the original D2 scheme design, and then, when the money wasn't available, LCC decided to proceed with an S2 scheme. Unfortunately they then found out the pot of money wasn't even sufficient for that, so removed an overbridge from one of the roads it crossed to save money, thus inconveniencing a lot of people who previously were in favour. And so we get to the present situation; an impasse.
I have just read the inspectors report and essentially it agreed with the removal of the road overbridge from the design, but was unhappy with the design of the much cheaper overbridge put back in to the scheme for cyclists and pedestrians.

Re: Lincoln Eastern Bypass
At the time the government was making it clear to local authorities had to pare back their schemes as much as possible, otherwise they would not get financial approval.
Re: Lincoln Eastern Bypass
The problem bridge has been redesigned so we may be a step nearer to seeing the bypass built.

I don't know what they're upset about now but there seems to be a lot of them.

I first discovered this item by seeing the teletext version, which is more negatively worded about the prospects of achieving another change to the design, with a councillor emphasizing the danger that the funding may be lost if they don't start soon.

Re: Lincoln Eastern Bypass
There's to be a further public inquiry into the modified SRO.

Order confirmed:

So, subject to dethbed legal challenges, it will presumably go ahead.

Re: Lincoln Eastern Bypass
One minor point. The authority had not made any tenders for construction until the public inquiry process was finished. Did it need to wait that long?? This means construction still can't proceed until a contractor is appointed. There was never any serious likelihood of permission being refused for such a major project.wrinkly wrote:Order confirmed:

By contrast, in Northern Ireland, contractors are often appointed at an early stage of the process, so that once the decision is made, they can hit the ground ready.

I hadn't heard of it before but I just noticed that this, or at least part of it, has been built and is now open.Truvelo wrote:There also seems to be an east-west link road planned for the city centre.

Re: Lincoln Eastern Bypass: "Get on with it!"
From 20th March 2017, the preparatory works for the bypass have begun. The archaeologists, though, have been busy since last October.
I think it may be the early summer before the JCB diggers are doing much digging. At 5pm on a typical weekday evening, when the bypass is fully open in two years time, what will the average speed of the bypass be? Single figures? May be quicker to go straight through Lincoln.

Re: Lincoln Eastern Bypass: "Get on with it!"
To be fair, none of the roads it connects to are dual carriageways, and it's primarily a bypass for the A15 which has a puny 8k AADT.
If extra money were available it'd make more sense to dual the eastern end of the existing bypass, which at 20k AADT will be far busier than the new bypass.

Re: Lincoln Eastern Bypass: "Get on with it!"
Works are in progress for the bridge under the Lincoln-Spalding railway - probably a separate contract with Network Rail as the employer.
As far as I could see there are no works for the Barnetby/Grimsby line crossing but that's easier as the bypass goes over the railway and it will probably be part of the main contract.
