If you pass the start of motorway sign on a pedal cycle, you're committing an offence, regardless of where you head next. So, no, you can't legally make your escape and you'd be given a rollocking by Mr Plod if he caught you.solocle wrote: ↑Mon May 10, 2021 12:23Well, that's not quite accurate. You've got a "no motor vehicles except authorised vehicles" access, so an errant cyclist can legally make their escape after passing the chopsticks. More concerning is the fact that the signage on the other end of these slip roads seems to be exactly the same.Bryn666 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 25, 2021 21:12There is an authorised vehicles only slip road for these eventualities. It's also where Mr Plod can give you a fine for ignoring the Section 36 traffic sign saying start of motorway 200 yards prior.Truvelo wrote: ↑Thu Feb 25, 2021 21:02 I'm sure links to the local road network were removed to avoid ratrunning. Villages such as Swinford had plenty of traffic zooming through them prior to the junction being rebuilt. What I do agree with is a simple exit slip from the westbound A14 to allow prohibited traffic an escape route should it have continued past J1. Without an equivalent eastbound entry slip it would go some way to mitigating the effects of ratrunning.
There's enough warning on the westbound A14 even if it's unlawful and stupid signage.

Re: Catthorpe re-modelling
But the issue is that you can access the motorway here from the service road as there are no chopsticks and no prohibitions on pedestrians or cyclists.

Looks fine, right? Well, the sign isn't TSRGD and doesn't prohibit pedestrians, but this wasn't the issue (I was on my bike anyway).
No, it was 3am, the ADS were downright misleading (not counting a farm entrance that I counted), I was preparing to turn left onto the A40, so very easily confused. Normally what happens then is that gate looms out of the gloom, but said gate had been left propped open. No visible sign (due to the angle), no gate in my way...
The first clue that I'd gone terribly, terribly wrong was the appearance of a very wide "bike lane". Followed quickly by the appearance of 3 traffic lanes, and passing headlights catching a big blue exit sign in the mid-distance.

To get to that point from the A14 you have passed the sign at J1 instructing non Motorway Traffic to leavec2R wrote: ↑Mon May 10, 2021 12:37 But the issue is that you can access the motorway here from the service road as there are no chopsticks and no prohibitions on pedestrians or cyclists.

The old alignment showed the left turn from the Swinford Road aka Main Street onto the slip showed it as leading onto the M6. Presumably the start of the service road has the usual rules about authorised vehicles only.

solocle indicates that at the other end of the service road, the signage doesn't say that but instead has the same "no motor vehicles" sign... which means that a cyclist or pedestrian could simply walk onto the motorway without passing anything to tell them that they aren't allowed to be there.

The M1 ones look to be similar - From M6
Re: Catthorpe re-modelling
Yes.
They did similar on the Huntingdon-Cambridge scheme such as here until I contacted them and they put up the additional signs such as the one in the background....

Re: Catthorpe re-modelling
I wonder if the Street View car here was an 'authorised vehicle'! Or, indeed, the car waiting to give way at the roundabout...
