Slightly off topic but here's a view of newly-laid track on the Borders Railway with a view under the A720 in the background.

That's not track track laying commences next month when the track laying train arrives at Millerhill and heads south.
Bowshank tunnel has the only rail on slab on the whole line so the rails are already laid there.
Plus Pints have been laid.
Many sites have sleepers.
I reckon it will be finished ahead of the stated September opening.
I'd bet on even the year end for driver training.
The stations are well on the way. There's a couple of bridges to finish signals and track.
I'd bet on new year opening or March.

There's still lots to do at Heriot and particularly in Gala. There is a vast amount of concrete going in here. The stone faced wall in the foreground has been completely removed and is being replaced by a reinforced concrete wall anchored to a slab which is being poured at a level well below the footings of the massive 1916 brick retaining wall behind. Work on the platform for Gala station can't even start until that is finished. Further south there is a pedestrian overbridge which has only just been started and a couple of others which require conversion or adaptations.
Given two good summers and a very mild winter it could have been built quicker, but the way it looks now I can't see the track, signalling and stations being finished before the spring at the earliest- handover for driver training etc is still scheduled for June.

Just discovered there's stuff online - fairly detailed - about options for Sheriffhall roundabout!!

http://www.transportscotland.gov.uk/pro ... roundabout

How come our Scots members missed this?

The link "Executive Summary of the DMRB" is of course not to a summary of the DMRB. It's to a summary of the report.

All of those options include a junction for the Millerhill Road section of the A6106, but on the Borders Railway site the engineering plans clearly show that road being stopped up at Sherifhall and being downgraded to an agricultural/access single track road with access only from The Cockatoo end.

http://www.bordersrailway.co.uk/media/1 ... 000004.pdf

They also went trough all the effort/cost of extending the Shawfair road to effectively bypass the Millerhill Road, and the way the new road is laid out to the north/Millerhill opposite from The Cockatoo hints that this road is destined to continue to the A68 junction of the A720, similar to option 4 but moving the East Collector Distributor Road to the north.

Although, some of the new signage erected heading north on the new Shawfair road says Dalkeith and A720 is accessible by turning right at the new roundabout towards the Cockatoo, even though no rail crossing has been built?

Anyways, is option 8 looking the most likely?

Scottish Parliament today:
Colin Beattie (Midlothian North and Musselburgh) (Scottish National Party): To ask the Scottish Government what progress it is making on achieving grade separation for the Sheriffhall roundabout.
(S4W-23749)

Derek Mackay: The Design Manual for Roads and Bridges sets outs a three stage design process for road schemes. The Stage 1 Assessment is now complete which narrowed an initial list of eight junction improvement options down to four. These are now being assessed as part of the Stage 2 Assessment to identify a preferred option. This is programmed to be complete by autumn 2015 at which time the preferred option would be made public.

Well they reopened the northern part of the A6106 a few days ago, and the impact on the A720 is already noticeable now the extra signal phase is back to allow traffic onto the rounabout. Queues eastbound to the roundabout have definitely got longer.

Colin Beattie (Midlothian North and Musselburgh) (Scottish National Party): To ask the Scottish Government, further to the answer to question S4W -23749 by Derek Mackay on 9 January 2015, whether it will provide an update on what progress it is making on achieving grade separation for the Sheriffhall roundabout.
(S4W-28403)

Derek Mackay: The Design Manual for Roads and Bridges sets outs a three stage design process for road schemes. With the stage 1 assessment complete we are progressing the stage 2 assessment to identify a preferred option. It is expected that the stage 2 assessment will be completed during summer 2016 at which time a preferred option will be made public for comment.

I look forward to seeing the options, though if I remember correctly the more ambitious parallel carriageway designs have fallen by the wayside.

Speaking of a lack of ambition, could Transport Scotland really not come up with a better logo than a level crossing?!

If I remember correctly some of the layouts posted by Gav were dropped a while ago.

That's also my recollection.

The problem is it's not an intersection, it's just one getting in the way of the other due to a lack of adequate investment...
