I can't believe I've been on SABRE over 3 years and haven't mentioned this yet.

It's one of the longest - and weirdest - unclassified dual carriageways I know. It was marked out as D2 to begin with - it's only traffic calming that has narrowed the lanes.

Basically, this was going to be the A34 - but Nimbyism and the A500 put paid to the idea!

Liverpool airport is accessed from an unclassified dual. There are also a good few others in the area off Speke Road that aren't even yellow on the OS

Unclassified Army road D2 connected to a long stretch of rare A325 D2. Not too sure why this was/is needed tbh.

How could I forget that one! Used to drive it regularly.. Like many such, it seems to have originated from grander plans, of course - follow the line west down Hardy Lane, across the river, and see where it ends up :-)

Whilst you're on that area there's Salford Shopping City's network of duals too.

However, as Peter said, none of these are bypassed former trunk roads, except for the original post and the former A2 at Lydden.

That's the one where the locals agitated for the speed limit to be reduced from 40 to 30 so they could park their cars at night without lights

And some similar ones around the Runcorn Shopping City Halton Lea.

Also a bit of former A50 at Blythe Bridge.

Birmingham has lots.

Ridgacre Road, Quinton
Quinton Road West, Quinton (part)
Quinton Road, Harborne (part)
Warstock Road, Warstock
Priory Road, Hall Green (part)
Highfield Road, Hall Green (part)
Robin Hood Lane, Hall Green (not the A4040 section)
Yardley Wood Road, Yardley Wood (part)
Tessall Lane, Longbridge (part)
Greenwood Avenue, Hall Green

There were more - West Boulevard, Quinton and Barnes Hill/Shenley Lane, for example, but they were incorporated into the B4121 when the West Boulevard Extension was completed in the late '80s. There are many more examples where there is room for dualling that never happened and now never will. Several of the above examples are clearly part of grander designs.

I can only think of one viable unclassified D2 in Ellesmere Port – Longlooms Road. A large Marks & Spencer store is currently being built on the spare land you see on the right.

Just off the roundabout in the middle of Longlooms Road is this short D2 curiosity, obviously part of a larger plan from the past.
The journey is never over until the arrival.

There are a couple of decent sections of unclassified D2 in Banbury with some interesting loops between carriageways to facilitate u-turns.
A personal favourite rural one of mine, although not as good as the military road shown earlier, is this one near Winfrith in Dorset.

EDIT
Oh dear God, it appears to have grown an ugly 40 mph limit! I used to enjoy doing 70 over the brow of the hill when I was much younger and more naive!

I'm guessing that piece of D1 exists to prevent overtaking on the brow of the hill?

Isn't that on the A1070 or A1155 or something like that....
Having walked down that very road today (my firm's other office is on Caxton Way) it is certainly marked on the ground as the A1070.

I used to live just around the corner from here!

Other DC's in birmingham include tangmere drive on castle vale and chelmsley road in chelmsley wood - there seem to be a good few in chelmsley wood.

My thoughts too, but I was surprised to do a quick count and found that only two V roads and two H roads are partially dualled unclassified roads. There are a couple of local roads in the centre of town and one in Bletchley, too.

I make it:
H5 from V3 to the A4146
H9 east of the Ouzel
H10 from V4/6 to just past the V7 (this would be your local one in Bletchley).
V6 between the A421 and A422, and a bit south of the A5
V7 between H4 and H7
V8 between H8 and H9
V9 between H5 and Campbell Park and from Campbell Park to H6 (these are only short)
The three E-W roads and two N-S roads in CMK that aren't grid roads.
The bits of Fen Street that have been built

Chelmsley Wood is in Solihull!
