Re: Manky Signs
Found another manky sign in Portscatho Square. These No Motor Vehicle "Except for access" signs always seem rather pointless to me and this is so old that it may as well be completly ignored.
Re: Manky Signs
This flag sign pointing to the M6 has seen better days.
Is it also botched, or was the use of Motorway font (and no brackets) correct when it was erected?

Re: Manky Signs
It's perfectly fine design wise, in fact that is a very good assembly! It's just not aged all that well...scragend wrote: ↑Wed Jun 06, 2018 10:35 This flag sign pointing to the M6 has seen better days.

How about some more beans Mr. Taggart?
Re: Manky Signs
Couldn't photograph it for obvious reasons, but there is a very battered motorway restrictions sign that must date back to the seventies on the A167(M) southbound with some of the letters missing.

Re: Manky Signs
With all the money currently being spent on the M60, maybe they could afford to replace this. It's starting to stand out a bit.
Re: Manky Signs
Here's a nice end of motorway on the A1 that was looking a bit faded last week:

There's also been a large scale replacement of signs on the Doncaster bypass - this was looking very tired but was replaced about a month ago: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@53.46280 ... 312!8i6656

Re: Manky Signs
An early Diamond Grade sign, from the late '80s and designed by hand as I recall. No KeySIGN available in the office in those days, not even AUTOCAD - who says consultants are tight-fisted...c2R wrote: ↑Sun Jul 29, 2018 09:16 There's also been a large scale replacement of signs on the Doncaster bypass - this was looking very tired but was replaced about a month ago: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@53.46280 ... 312!8i6656

Re: Manky Signs
Predates the mandatory use of destinations on a 1 mile ADS if that old.
When did DOS based SignPlot come out? I have drawings at home dated 1996 that were done in v1.

Re: Manky Signs
Certainly designed by hand, I could easily be off on the date though, it was a long time ago. Not one of mine.

Re: Manky Signs
I always wonder if hand designed signs are less likely to be full of screw ups on the basis that redesigns take ages so the incentive to be right first time is there.
Although even old signs weren't immune from being cack either.

Re: Manky Signs
It’s very common to have chopsticks where you change between motorways, even if it’s not strictly correct.
I have websites about: motorway services | Fareham
Re: Manky Signs
The correct sign would just be the route number in a rectangle as it is effectively an RCS at this location but that never happens any more.Johnathan404 wrote: ↑Mon Jul 30, 2018 09:02 It’s very common to have chopsticks where you change between motorways, even if it’s not strictly correct.
Also note that sign is an M62 one badly patched over. For about 18 months the entire M60 had signs like this whilst the changes were completed.

Re: Manky Signs
It helped if you knew what you were doing and had at least semi-reasonable draughting skills. Which, in these CAD days, is a skill long gone. Of course, Circular Roads 7/75, which I cut my teeth on, was also a much simpler document, which helped a bit.

Re: Manky Signs
Indeed, and of course there's still no formal guidance on what an ADS should look like beyond the block spacing, etc. Which no-one gets right either.Conekicker wrote: ↑Mon Jul 30, 2018 11:58It helped if you knew what you were doing and had at least semi-reasonable draughting skills. Re: Manky Signs
All will become clear, I'm led to believe, in the forthcoming TSM Chapter 7. Best not to mention Figure 6.1 from IAN 145 nor S12-5-7 and S12-28-3 from TSRGD though. The design rules for S12-28-5 and -6 could be a bit clearer as well. Just saying like...
