University Challenge Roads Questions

Post by owen b »

There were three roads related questions on University Challenge on BBC2 this evening, and two of them were not very easy (I guessed wrong on the second question). They were about 20-25 minutes into the programme if anyone wants to view on iPlayer. I won't write the questions here as the wording of the second question in effect gives away the answer to the first question. I wonder if the researchers used the SABRE Wiki?

If I recall correctly, they got the first (easy) one for five points, made a reasonable guess (the same as my guess as it happens) for the second which turned out to be wrong, and another reasonable but incorrect guess for the third.

I got all three, but that second one isn't easy (their guess wasn't bad - how many people could even have a guess).

It's just after the 25 minute position. Similarly, question 1 was easy, 2 was difficult and 3 was not too hard. The answer to question 1 set the theme of the three questions.

I'd have got 1 and 3 right, but not 2.

I'd have got 1 right and would have arrived at 3 given a bit of time to think about it but I'm not sure whether I'd have been able to answer it straight away under the pressure of UC conditions (not that I know what that feels like). Wouldn't have had the faintest idea about 2.

I think 2 and 3 were really geography general knowledge questions masquerading as road questions rather than a test of hardcore road-geek expertise, though.

I answered 1 correctly but, I struggled on questions 2 & 3 and needed a quick peek of an atlas to get both correct.

Like roadtester mentioned, all three questions were trivial and benefit as local knowledge questions in contrast to general knowledge, which the contestants easily displayed.

I surprised myself and got all three. Number 2 was a guess though, and given that my knowledge of geography in that part of the world is fairly sparse, it was lucky that the one place I could think of was the right answer!

I'm surprised at you folks!! I got all three, and I thought they were all pretty easy for the likes of us.

A few years ago on UC there was a starter questions asking which A road linked London directly to Dover, passing through Rochester, Gillingham, etc....

This led to picture bonuses in which contestants were shown a blank map of the UK with a road etched across it. I got all three then too. They were:

A57, A38 and A6, in that order!

And I didn't even need to look at the file names!

Anyone who didn't get the first one should be kicked out of the society

I got the Isle of Man question also, largely because I knew the only major town on the west coast

it was a university challenge question 7 1/2 years ago that I found out about SABRE and realised there were other map collecting road obsessed nuts like me. The question refered to SABRE in the opening and when the programme finished i was on the web and joined straight away. thanks UC
