A19/A1058 junction improvement

At last and these plans sound really interesting with bridges and lowered carriageways. Although I have split with my partner in North Shields, I would still love to see the completed project.

A very misleading article - really really poor writing. The A1058 already flies over the junction on a bridge.

What is going to happen (in a logical sense) is that they will build underpasses for the A19 to go under junction, rather than bridges to take the A1058 over the A19 (though of course, that's what will happen - new bridges over the new A19).

Will they do Moor Farm and Seaton Burn though?

Having looked at the article again and the layout of the junction, this seems logical to have the A19 to go under the current junction. The A1058 is fine as it is, it's just the A19 that needs fixing.

They will of course have to rebuild the bridges there too. So it's not that misleading.

The only thing is that they need to get on with it. This project should have been started at the same time as the tunnel dualling.

Preferred Route Announcement.

(wouldn't this topic be better placed in B&I Roads?)

Another case of not joined up thinking. This junction is one of the most congested in the North East.

Perhaps they didn't have the money to do both at the same time?

Possibly, but this junction needs to be sorted out. Since the Silverlink opened the congestion has been awful.

AFAIK the tunnel dualling was privately funded.

Different clients anyway. The A19/Coast Road scheme is HA, the tunnel is I think a joint board of local authorities.

Seaton Burn and Moor Farm are currently officially dead, but will doubtless be resurrected some time. Only this junction and Testos are being actively pursued.

Apart from the lack of spiralling on the roundabout, I would agree. Having 3 concentric lanes all the way round is just nuts.

The road markings in the image may just be diagrammatic and not representative of what's planned.
How would you like your grade separations, Sir?

How will that work southboun. The current ?3 lane carriageway is already right against the hotel, yet the diagram shows a 2 lane (plus shoulder) in a cutting, then retaining wall, then at least 2 lanes onto roundabout...so thats a lot of land take?

Don't understand. The A19 is two lanes?

southbound carruiageway widens to 3 lanes just before the roundabout, this carriageway is constrained by the hotel.

The diagram shows the 2 lane carriageway in a cutting then the support fo r the sliproad then a 2 lane sliproad, thus will be wider than the existing formation?

They will have to go outside the existing highway boundary. But there's plenty of space around the junction - on the A19 approach to the north of the junction, where you say the hotel constrains it, there's plenty of room for the extra space to be claimed on the west side of the road.

Better than what we have now where a 45 year old junction struggles to cope. This does look very futuristic.

Futuristic isn't how I'd describe it. Decades overdue more like it.
