Re: IRE: M8 J19 upgrade updates
Possible €70m cost overrun (and subsequent furore) could see project postponed ('cancelled' is the word they used on the radio, but it's not in the article).
I have websites about: motorway services | Fareham
Re: IRE: M8 J19 upgrade updates
It won't be cancelled, that's for certain. They'll hammer out a deal in the next few weeks.
I would have thought ground conditions would have been fully known in advance.

Diggers back on site according to the traffic cams on this long delayed scheme.

It hasn't been re-tendered yet so they won't be for main construction works! Services diversion is all that was agreed to proceed with.

(not sure if we can embed tweets here)
First slip road well underway here - N8 to M8 north. The mainline will be realigned to accommodate the slip road in the main contract as per the image.

Re: IRE: M8 J19 upgrade updates
Has the main contract been awarded yet? Who got it? And has work on the main contract started yet?

Re: IRE: M8 J19 upgrade updates
Expected within the next couple of days, and it's expected to be Sisk, as they're on site already and can continue without interruption.
Today is Budget day, so tomorrow when the papers and TV are poring over tax changes is usually a good time to slip out news that might be contentious, and the mess up with the contract for this scheme certainly fits that bill.
Regarding the M8-N8 movement being so circuitous to stay on "the same road", it's not just that the N8 road to the west into Tivoli cannot accommodate more traffic, but also the the longer term plans for the network: the southern part of M8 will eventually form the eastern sector of the N40 Cork Ring Road, so there's a high chance that the N8 from Dunkettle into Cork City could be re-classified as N25 (now that this route number is no longer used for the South Ring Road), and thus the N8 route will terminate to the north of Glanmire at a new junction between the M8 and N40. (N25 already invisibly becomes N8 on the overbridge at the current Dunkettle roundabout).

Re: IRE: M8 J19 upgrade updates
Just to update this, it is indeed Sisk, confirmation in this press release:
https://www.tii.ie/news/press-releases/ ... /index.xml
This should at least remove any further delay from the project.

Not sure quite why this hasn't been updated, but work has been underway during the various lockdowns since about January now.

Re: IRE: M8 J19 upgrade updates
Yes, great progress is now being made on the Dunkettle Interchange rebuild - the new slip roads are taking shape, the “jet” slip bypassing the existing roundabout N8 East to M8 North is operational, the structures for the bridges are taking shape.
I imagine the new junction layout will be opened on a phased basis, with some temporary lane closures and sections built repurposed for temporary traffic flows. Looking like for the Summer of 2022 when the new Dunkettle is fully operational.

Is the talk of re-designating the N40 as motorway still a thing or is that likely to need the M28 before anything happens?

Re: IRE: M8 J19 upgrade updates
It is still a medium to long-term plan AFAIK, but the M28 for sure would have be open and connected to the rest of the motorway system via the new Dunkettle interchange, and there is the thorny problem of capacity bottlenecks at the Jack Lynch tunnel and the two overpasses at Douglas which would need reconstruction and widening.
The fact that the final legal challenge to the M28 project has been dismissed by the Supreme Court means that this badly needed infrastructure is going ahead soon. Cork and its wider region has been deprived of major transport projects compared to other parts of Ireland over the past 15 years, after major investment in the 1990s and early 2000s. The M20 between Cork and Limerick, our second and third cities, remains unbuilt.

Re: IRE: M8 J19 upgrade updates
Nope, afraid not. They were going to open it early this year as it was built in the enabling works contract (presumably for diversions etc) but they haven't opened it - no point with lower traffic levels.
Its also quite tricky to open because both M8 carriageways will be shifted slightly east (hence the new bridges) so it doesn't smoothly join with the current M8 at the moment.

Re: IRE: M8 J19 upgrade updates
Even more progress over the past two months in the M8/N25/N40 Dunkettle junction rebuild works - many of the bridge structures are going up nicely.
Major earthworks and embankments for more bridge structures and slip roads to make this, one of the most congested junctions in Ireland into a full freeflow, bar one movement. This is a such a strategic and important junction. Cork - both the city and the county - will benefit hugely.

Impressive progress what with Covid etc.
This will match a few of the M50 junctions for the title of "Spaghettiist Junction in Ireland"!
