Interesting thing on the editions .Mine has a brown cover with the words "Third edition 1972" on the second last cover . It is contained in a black plastic sleeve .

Missed that one off my list as it isn't on my atlas shelf, it's on the shelf next to me here! It features a red cover with a black spine.Mattemotorway wrote:Spotted today- Reader's Digest Road Atlas of Britain, copyright 1988 with amendments 1990, seen in Fossgate Books in York...
Think it had a brown cover... The cover looked more like something from the early 70's rather than the early 90's...

I'll have to keep my eyes open when looking at 2nd had bookshops, though many charity shops seem to be more savvy about pricing books.
My Dad still regrets getting rid of a mid 1950s road atlas, as it was a good depiction of the UK's road system pre-motorways.

Re: Readers Digest / AA New Book of the Road
Hi!
I have the 1998 and 2006 versions of these and they're really lovely maps!
Personally I don't like the smaller scale versions of the maps for Northern Scotland and the Islands as this makes the island maps much too small to read!
I have had a go at making mapping like this using G.I.S. software and the free "OS Open Data" ESRI Vector Files but the road symbols always end up much too wide and the road junction interfaces don't show correctly!
I'd love to work out how to make a "Readers Digest" style town plan tho!
If anyone knows any links to tutorials or finished British examples (not stupid rotten American maps) please can they point me in the right direction?

Unless I'm mistaken the maps are by Collins rather than the AA....
