A12 upgrade for Sizewell C

Post by Big Nick »

Suffolk Coastal District Council have made an upgrade of the A12 a condition of any new nuclear power station at Sizewell. This is despite a major backer, Centrica, pulling out of the project.
The council wants the A12 to be routed away from the villages of Marlesford, Glemham, Stratford St Andrew and Farnham to relieve the pressure of heavy traffic. This ensures support of the new powerplant from the Four Villages Bypass Group.

Without seeing a map I assume the road would closely follow the railway line up to Benhall Green. This would link the short dual carriageway there to the DC south of Marlesford.

Be a start if it is to be a modern D2. Presume if Sizewell is upgraded they will have to redesign the Snape junction? It already is an accident blackspot there from memory, or was it the one nearer Ipswich?

While they are at it, dualling the short stretch from Woodbridge to Wickham Market wouldn't be a bad idea.

Agreed, the road is WS2 here but at some points has enough spare land to thread a D2 through.

Let's get rid of the excessive roundabouts as well while we're at it.

I personally don't feel that this stretch road needs to be a full D2, it's rarely congested and you can normally do 50-60mph, even at busy times. It would certaintly benefit from having the vast central hatched area removed and replaced with S2+1 or true WS2 though.

Do not get to excited this is just a rural district council trying to keep its local communities happy. They are not the Highway Authority who are Suffolk CC and there are the requirements of the National Policy Planning Framework (NPPF) to met.

Mitigation measures are only required if the residual impacts of the completed development are severe and this does not related to construction traffic which is a temporary item assocaited with building something. Once built , given there is already a nuclear power station there the increase in vehicular movements asscoaited with the development on this section of the A12 is going to be small, given the fact that traffic will dilute from the site as it disperses further away.

Given the requirements for Planning Obligations within the NPPF, which are vigoursly enforced by Inspectors and Secretary of State, there is very little chance that this suggestion will be policy compliant.

Sorry to put a downer on things. Have to stop, i'm at lunch and now talking shop.

With it looking like Sizewell C may be approved, it's worth mentioning the road elements of the proposal.

A two village (Statford and Farnham) bypass for the A12 is included. It's short and S2. Plan here: https://infrastructure.planninginspecto ... proval.pdf

There would also be either a rail or road link to the power station. The road link would be an S2 bypass of the B1122 from south of Yoxford to south of Theberton. Plans here: https://infrastructure.planninginspecto ... 1_of_3.pdf

Suffolk CC wanted a four rather than two village bypass, adding Marlesford and Little Glemham, and possibly dualled. This was shot down a few years ago.
