The new D2 between the new junction2 M55 and the junction of the A5085/A583 will be the western bypass of Preston along with all the development land to the east of it. At present the area is rural with a canal going through it so a massive change.

I've just come across a cutting from Nov 2008 saying the Broughton bypass had gained planning permission!

Hi!

Broughton is getting, along with Galgate, to be an absolute pain in the backside along this length of the A6 between J32-J33, so the A6 Broughton Bypass can't come soon enough in my opinion!

Where's all this traffic come from anyway?

This length of A6, apart from the ridiculous long 40 and 50 limits, seems to have far too many HGVs using the entire length between Galgate & Broughton without stopping or accessing Garstang or premises anywhere along it - what's wrong with the M6?

Galgate should be made no right turn, and a bus stop provided on the Plough car park instead of on the road there and after the lights. That would soon sort out the bottleneck. Stopping numpty van drivers stopping at the Spar for their bacon butties in a morning would help too. Double yellows don't seem to apply to Manc van numpty.

In Galgate at least, a lot of HGV's for Heysham come off at J33 rather than J34 and trundle through the city. Hopefully this will change once the Heysham-M6 link road opens next summer.

A lot of traffic comes down from the M6 at J33 to get onto the A586 for Blackpool. It is still the signed route off the M6 southbound after all.

Galgate is potentially going to be 'bypassed', there's been talk about moving J33 entirely so it's to the north of Galgate. I don't see this being remotely workable myself. The no right turn during peak times would be a good fix.

Also, the speed limits are hideous along the entire length from Lancaster to Preston.

Probably because of the huge distance between J32-33. This sort of thing stems from a policy of restricting the number and spacing of motorway junctions that successive UK governments have imposed. A similar problem occurs on the A25 around Sevenoaks.

There's no reason why a new junction can't be built near Garstang. In fact two junctions could be added without any weaving problems then the A6 would carry traffic over shorter distances. Say someone in Bilsborrow wants to drive to Lancaster - would they head south to M55 J1 and hit a queue at Broughton or use a long stretch of A6 north to Galgate? A junction at Garstang would answer that easily.
How would you like your grade separations, Sir?

The second round of consultation is now open for the dualling of the A582 from the M65 at Bamber Bridge to Preston via South Ribble, linking into the Penwortham Byapss:

Update on the Penwortham Bypass itself. Still on track for a 2020 opening:

Pity it can't connect directly to the M65, isn't it?

Hot on the heels of the PWDR commencing construction last week (see other thread), LCC have announced the opening of the Penwortham Bypass - now known as John Horrocks Way - has been brought forward from early 2020 to 2nd December 2019:
