It is quite hard to read, especially at night. Surely it would be better blank rather than conveying the pointless hard to read message that it does.

They might as well replace the signs with MS4s...AutomaticBeloved wrote: ↑Wed Sep 25, 2019 20:12The Northbound one's been like that for years. Though roads may not put a smile on everyone's face, there is one road that always will: the road to home.
Re: Pointless motorway overhead messages
Has anyone seen any "pointless" messages on MS4s? (Considering that 3-line MS3s are the only culprits of FREIGHT TO EU PAPERS MAY CHANGE)?

Re: Pointless motorway overhead messages
I saw that on a four line sign on the M1 yesterday. It said "EU freight" rather than "Freight to EU"!

MS4? And if so was it all caps?the cheesecake man wrote: ↑Thu Sep 26, 2019 12:59I saw that on a four line sign on the M1 yesterday. It said "EU freight" rather than "Freight to EU"!

It was a modern smart motorway sign. It wasn't all capitals:EpicChef wrote: ↑Thu Sep 26, 2019 18:25MS4? And if so was it all caps?the cheesecake man wrote: ↑Thu Sep 26, 2019 12:59I saw that on a four line sign on the M1 yesterday. It said "EU freight" rather than "Freight to EU"!

Am I missing something here, does the capitalisation have any bearing on this at all?
Re: Pointless motorway overhead messages
Seems to be the norm on other motorways( as seen on M42 TODAY). So, next question - do those in charge of the Motorway signage know more about Brexit than Boris is telling us.

Re: Pointless motorway overhead messages
Probably, I'm trying to think when those gantries went up, because I'm pretty sure the northbound sign has had "Sign not in use" every since they put it up (possibly mid 2000s when they put the jersey barrier in the centre). I wonder if they are just empty housings? possibly the gantries come with the housing ready for the sign innards to be fitted and they never fitted these out.EpicChef wrote: ↑Wed Sep 25, 2019 23:15They might as well replace the signs with MS4s...AutomaticBeloved wrote: ↑Wed Sep 25, 2019 20:12The Northbound one's been like that for years. I assumed it had some bearing on whether the sign was or wasn't an MS4.avtur wrote: ↑Thu Sep 26, 2019 20:14the cheesecake man wrote: ↑Thu Sep 26, 2019 19:06It was a modern smart motorway sign. It wasn't all capitals:

Re: Pointless motorway overhead messages
Every time I drive westbound on the M27, just after junction 3 (M271), there is a VMS which invariably says "EXETER 2 hours"
I always wonder
a) how accurate that is because I can barely ever do it in 2 hours from Bournemouth, and
b) how much traffic this applies to, as I would expect most stuff to use the A303 if they've come from further north than Winchester.
And c) how much more useful it might be to indicate times to Bournemouth or Ringwood (I appreciate that 2 hours to Exeter suggests it's free of hold-ups to Ringwood, but even so).

I drove the M25 yesterday and it was smart motorway. 4 lines on an MS4, all capitals.the cheesecake man wrote: ↑Thu Sep 26, 2019 19:06It was a modern smart motorway sign. Re: Pointless motorway overhead messages
These same messages (or some variant of it) are all over the M60 too.
Re: Pointless motorway overhead messages
I can assure you that's not the case at all.
Opinion is purely my own and all those other exceptions and excuses.
Re: Pointless motorway overhead messages
I don't see where you said there was a 10 minute delay. My apologies I missed that.the cheesecake man wrote: ↑Tue Sep 24, 2019 20:42I'm miffed that I was told there was a one minute delay when it was already known that there was a ten minute delay. I'm miffed that the useful information as to where the incident was was withheld in favour of the freight to EU drivel.
The EU messages are on the lowest priority, so if that wasn't there then the sign would be blank by default. So a 1 minute delay (if that's what it was) plus a QUEUE CAUTION suggests to me it was the tail end of a problem.

Re: Pointless motorway overhead messages
To be fair I didn't explicitly say it, I merely implied it by suggesting that the queue messages were in fact accurate and the one minute delay was wrong. Apologies if it wasn't clear.Matthew wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2019 23:11I don't see where you said there was a 10 minute delay. The M20, London-bound this morning, same message, all capitals.EpicChef wrote: ↑Sat Sep 28, 2019 20:03I drove the M25 yesterday and it was smart motorway. 4 lines on an MS4, all capitals.the cheesecake man wrote: ↑Thu Sep 26, 2019 19:06It was a modern smart motorway sign. It wasn't all capitals:

Re: Pointless motorway overhead messages
Is it England-wide? These were on the M5 southbound and M4/E30 westbound at Almondsbury. I suppose being the E30 it's fairly relevant as the UK portion starts and ends at what could become customs posts.
Re: Pointless motorway overhead messages
They could at least have expressed it in Haiku form:
Freight goods for EU
When leaves and papers changing
Check if you please soon

Re: Pointless motorway overhead messages
Excellent!
Has anybody dared display this message in Scotland or Northern Ireland?
