A83 Rest And Be Thankful blocked again

Yet again - but this time too far west for the diversion route to be any use.

Re: A83 Rest And Be Thankful blocked again
Would I be right in thinking that the lower photo in the BBC report is not the A83, there are no lines on the verges on centre, and the road looks too narrow. I'm inclined to say that judging by what landscape is visible, it could be the 'new' old military road, but I've not heard of a lanslip onto it.
Rob.
My mission is to travel every road and visit every town, village and hamlet in the British Isles.
I don't like thinking about how badly I am doing.

Given the drop of a hat creates a need for a tunnel over here in Madeira - I'm starting to think that it's about time something more resilient needs to be built across this route - not necessarily a tunnel like here, but a route that's not affected by land slips, with perhaps some form of structure at the western end to aid the passage past the B828 junction. I've seen numerous similar solutions in the Alps and Pyrenees, that could give a guide to a longer term solution.

You mean something similar to a snow shed?
How would you like your grade separations, Sir?

The tunnels in Madeira are nice aren't they. Make sure you get off the main routes and see some of the older tunnels, especially the ones with waterfalls right across the entranceHaydn1971 wrote:Given the drop of a hat creates a need for a tunnel over here in Madeira - I'm starting to think that it's about time something more resilient needs to be built across this route - not necessarily a tunnel like here, but a route that's not affected by land slips, with perhaps some form of structure at the western end to aid the passage past the B828 junction. e.g. This tunnel http://goo.gl/maps/djwV1 is bypassed by another longer tunnel!

The week after the Campbeltown ferry service ended for the winter.
OT I realise... Mark - I've done a complete circuit of the island over the last few days covering in no particular order the key VR1, VE1, VE2, VE3, VE4, E101, E109 & E110 routes... Haven't time to do the cross country routes to the north east of Funchal, but that gives me something to do next time.
The VE3 is being extended west and construction is now past Ponta Do Pargo (albeit halted through I'd guess lack of funding with just tunnels built), I'd hazard a guess at it eventually linking up with the VE2 in Porto Moniz after the economy picks up.
Some amazing tunnels, structures, extreme gradients - I've never had to drop to second gear on a motorway before to get up a hill !!! I'd recommend the place, stay in an apartment near Funchal, grab a hire car, preferably the larger engine size for the car size and go explore.
Next Sabre roadtrip anyone ?

Agreed; part of the reason I went was that for anyone interested in road and road building, the place is completely amazing. Chock full of as much special road infrastructure as you'd find in the entire UK. Several miles of D2 tunnel to get to a tiny fishing village - check .
On the other hand, now you know where all the EU money goes

And fortunately the A82 overnight closures do not start again until next week, presumably there is a plan to cancel in the event of any closure on the Rest and Be Thankful but you can never be sure with Traffic Scotland.A8000Bob wrote:The week after the Campbeltown ferry service ended for the winter.

But given the referendum next year will there be any will to spend money from the public purse on Scottish roads.J--M--B wrote:For Argyll has a report on a meeting of the A83 Marketing Group.

They had a report a few days ago about this question in the Edinburgh Parliament.

Has this old military road diversion actually been used yet?
On this film it doesn't look wide enough for 2 way traffic anyway...
