Re: M181
I think if the public have been consulted and have generally approved the design of the roundabout it will go ahead. If not then they will have to be consulted sooner or later on whether the design should change. The challenge would be over what the alternatives are if the public were not to approve - they may be at odds with each other on what is bad about the roundabout.

Re: M181
Groundwork is starting this month to create the northernmost of the pair of new roundabouts along the length of the M181.. scheduled to last 48 weeks at a cost of £4.5m to include a new 0.6mile link road through to Scotter Road.

No news yet as to a start date on construction of the southernmost roundabout crossing Burringham Road yet.

Re: M181
That would probably mark the end of the M181 number then - the remaining stub, once these roundabouts are built, will probably just become a small spur of the M180.

HE won't update the paperwork so the M181 will just be M181, just a fraction of its former self.Gareth Thomas wrote: ↑Thu Jun 04, 2020 13:03 That would probably mark the end of the M181 number then - the remaining stub, once these roundabouts are built, will probably just become a small spur of the M180.

https://www.grimsbytelegraph.co.uk/news ... pe-2433744 This article confirms the M181 will terminate at the new junction with the remaining road to be de-trunked and the A1077 to be extended. Be interested to see if the HS is retained or opened up as a third lane? Maybe a bus lane? Or perhaps a 'wide' cycle/pedestrian pathway. The remaining stub will be approx. 0.5 mile long.... Wouldn't take much to patch over the M181 with (M180) and (A1077)? Could be legislation issues maybe and further cost to HE.Bryn666 wrote: ↑Thu Jun 04, 2020 17:42HE won't update the paperwork so the M181 will just be M181, just a fraction of its former self.Gareth Thomas wrote: ↑Thu Jun 04, 2020 13:03 That would probably mark the end of the M181 number then - the remaining stub, once these roundabouts are built, will probably just become a small spur of the M180.
Re: M181
What I can not understand is why they couldn't use the existing bridge and build a GSJ.
I know the reason why, viability of the scheme will be affected etc, but I expect more from he HE, not to back down, unlike local councils where backbone is sometimes limited when there is a £ sign.

Re: M181
Once this new roundabout is open to traffic would the A159 south of Scunthorpe be rerouted to join the motorway at this new junction. Looking at a map it would make sense to reroute the A159 from Scotter along North Moor Road, Scotter Road South and then left at the roundabout onto Burringham Road (do away with the weight limit) and join the motorway at the new junction. Of course this would add more traffic to the new roundabout but that's another reason for proper forward planning to grade separate it.
Re: M181
Would make sense in some regards. Could even reroute the A159 along Burringham Road only if cost of signage is too much for North lincs council. And would also mean the A18 potentially being turned into a non-primary route as well as the A1077 no longer needing to be of primary status once extended along the M181 to the new roundabout.roadphotos wrote: ↑Tue Jun 16, 2020 13:36 Once this new roundabout is open to traffic would the A159 south of Scunthorpe be rerouted to join the motorway at this new junction. And another motorway disappears... At this rate motorways won’t be a thing in the next few years! That junction is incredibly appalling as well! A dumbbell would’ve been so much better...
Motorways travelled on so far: M1, M2, M3, M4, M5, M6, M6 Toll, M11, M18, M20, M23, M25, M26, M27, M42, M62, M180, A1(M), A3(M), A14(M)

Highways England is working under the same overall instructions from Westminster as Councils, namely Development = Good and to be facilitated where possible.A303Chris wrote: ↑Mon Jun 08, 2020 13:53 What I can not understand is why they couldn't use the existing bridge and build a GSJ.

The other thing is the M181 is not part of the strategic highway network and transferring it to the local authority will save HE from having to pay to maintain it in future years. Granted thats not a big saving, but as one supermarket used to say 'Every Little Helps'....
Re: M181
What would the LA do with a D3M though. Surely reducing the speed limit to 50 mph is likely to happen (reduce noise pollution for new builds & less wear on the road as well as safer).
With lower speed limit you can get rid of the Hard shoulder, maybe narrow the lanes a little bit. Then put a VRS between Lane 1 & the HS. Then repurpose the HS as a "cycle superhighway" with DEDICATED OVERTAKING LANES. Would be the highest quality cycle track in the nation (until you get to a roundabout).
The spur never really deserved a M number of its own in the first place, so I'd presume it would just be a spur of the M180 as it should always of been.

Re: M181
The de-trunking order had been published for the M181 between the new roundabout and the A18.

Re: M181
Can confirm the roundabout is half constructed - at the moment the M181 still goes through the middle but it won't be long before traffic is diverted onto the two halves of the circulatory.
I don't know why the northern M181 roundabout couldn't have been enlarged and a residential link plugged into that. It's baffling, although losing all of 600 yards of the M181 will presumably save HE millions in maintenance over the next 190 years...

What is does not say is what the new number will be, I suspect it will be an extension of the A1077Kkervinjones wrote: ↑Thu Dec 10, 2020 20:42 The de-trunking order had been published for the M181 between the new roundabout and the A18.

The M25 - The road to nowhere
Re: M181
Just to check... the Gazette text states 'This length of road shall be classified as a ‘classified road’ as from the date on which the Order comes into force and responsibility shall transfer to North Lincolnshire Council (who will become the highway authority for that area).'
Does that actually mean it won't be the M181? Could it continue to be motorway class, but under local authority control (like the M65 near Colne)?

Re: M181
There's no chance that a roundabout midway along would result in two different motorways - Lincolnshire will just extend the A1077.stu531 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 16, 2020 13:35 Just to check... the Gazette text states 'This length of road shall be classified as a ‘classified road’ as from the date on which the Order comes into force and responsibility shall transfer to North Lincolnshire Council (who will become the highway authority for that area).'

Re: M181
Did they not try this with the A601(M) to put a roundabout in and have the motorway both sides of the roundabout between the M6 and the A6 ?
I remember seeing this and it was adjusted to removing the M status and having the route as non motorway. They would not allow an at grade on a motorway.
