N6 Galway bypass

Post by bothar »

There hasn't been much discussion of this.
Galway is very congested with a limited number of bridges over the River Corrib. An earlier scheme for a bypass failed at the planning stage for environmental reasons. New routes were proposed closer to the city, which of course meant more conflict with residents and businesses.

A proposed route is being announced, which is mostly the blue route, apparently.

Apart from requiring the removal of 50 hours this route also impacts on the racecourse and the university, who are not exactly pleased.

Yeah, I heard an in-depth discussion on this on RTE radio this afternoon while driving through the M11 works, appropriately enough...

Around 45 homeowners will be affected by finalised proposals for a new road in Galway.

The N6 Galway City Transport Project aims to deal with congestion in the city and assist the flow of traffic from Connemara through Galway.

The final detail of the so-called "emerging route corridor" to deal with regular gridlock in Galway will be made public on Thursday.

It is understood that it will involve two tunnelled sections, both on the east side of the Corrib, and a new crossing of the river, close to NUI Galway.

The first section of tunnel would run from the eastern approach to the city, close to the end of the existing M6, and emerge near Galway Racecourse.

The route continues westwards, before a second section of tunnel on the approach to the Corrib.

This is needed to alleviate concerns about limestone pavement in the area, which is protected under the EU Habitats Directive.

The road would then cross the river on a new bridge and continue over lands owned by the university.

It would terminate at a point west of the village of Barna.

Landowners in the affected areas will get letters and maps on Thursday morning.

They will be invited to individual consultations with planners over the coming weeks.

Tunnels and a spaghetti type junction with the M6.

Why are there two junctions close together facing the same way at the eastern tunnel?

The west one is the N17 Atlantic Corridor towards Tuam and Knock.

The east one is presumably access for the Galway Racecourse and Technology Park, which flank the planned route at that point.

The other junction between the tunnels is the N84 to Castlebar.

Does it need to be this complex

It's not all that complex, it's rather an efficient way to make that junction free-flow. Truvelo would approve.

I wouldn't approve of the map though as it doesn't show the bridges so it's hard to say what the levels are. It could all be at-grade :@

But it doesn't really need to be free flowing. What I was thinking was make the roundabout bigger and have a conventional GSJ. Other than traffic going to / coming from the south the traffic will have to stop stop at that roundabout anyway. Also it looks confusing as it seems to be a TOTSO with the main line running into the city on the existing relief/bypass than around on the new bypass

Probably better to spend the money extend the free flowing section one more junction at the far end.

Agree this junction often look more complex that they really are and the map does not help.

It could be better. Traffic coming south off the bypass has an exit that allows them to use the loop at the very bottom to reach the roundabout, but there's a weaving section on that sliproad where that traffic will mix with vehicles coming southwards away from the roundabout. Traffic from the bypass going to the roundabout will approach from the right and need to move left while traffic from the roundabout heading to the south will approach from the left and need to move right.

It could easily be solved by moving the sliproad off the bypass northwards so it merged from the left, not the right. :hammer:

A planning application was apparently lodged over the summer, with suggested start dates of 2019, 2020 or 2021:

http://connachttribune.ie/city-bypass-p ... -july-200/

The current version of the plan has a much less complex terminal junction:

Planning application due soon for a bypass of Galway within the next few weeks.

Looks like it will be a motorway?

At that time a submission can be made to An Bord Pleanála on the proposed acquisition of the property as part of the Motorway Order/Protected Road Order or on the Environmental Impact Assessment Report.
Extension of the M6 then?

I don't know much about this scheme. Is a tunnel included? I think I read that somewhere.

The junction at Coolagh looks interesting but I'm not sure if the N67/R446 crosses below the current line of the N6 or whether it's an at-grade crossroads.

I found a better drawing, which shows it would have been an offside cloverstack, like a contorted version of M50/N2.

It's an at-grade signalized junction: http://www.n6galwaycity.ie/wp-content/u ... Sheets.pdf

Irl: M6 Galway bypass (18 km)

Post by odlum »

This scheme has been given the go ahead to go to planning with a motorway order. It will bypass Galway east to west and will be an urban motorway.

It will involve:

Bridge and viaduct over the River Corrib
2 tunnel sections
Will join directly with M6 to the east
40 homes to be demolished
Cost €600m
The ring road would commence with a new interchange at the end of the M6 and involve a section of tunnel on the approach to Galway Racecourse.

The road would then continue westwards towards the Corrib, with a second section of tunnel en route, before crossing the river on a new bridge.

Planners hope to traverse lands at NUI Galway on a viaduct before veering towards the Bushy Park area.
It's likely to be 2020 or 2021 before construction commences.

I suppose it will improve connections to the more isolated parts of Connemara/West Co. Galway as well with eastward travel currently being fairly restricted aside from passing through the city.

Presumably the old N6 through Galway becomes the R446 when the new M6 bypass is open.

Yes, that's the plan.

It will make it much easier to get through and continue west.

I actually think it will be quite a fun road to drive on with the tunnels and viaducts in quick succession.
