About bloody time! Now they need to get on with the construction work ASAP.

But Galway’s traffic nightmare won’t be solved by this road alone. The legacy of poor planning and car dependency is obvious to anyone who lives and works in the city.

Presumably the western single carriageway section with at-grade junctions won't be motorway?

PS - I'd suggest use of the search function before making a new thread about a long running scheme: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=34348&p=981282&hilit=Galway#p981282

It's an at-grade signalized junction: http://www.n6galwaycity.ie/wp-content/u ... Sheets.pdf
It's grade separated as far as I know.

The N67/R446 meets the existing A6 at an at-grade crossroads. That is however connected to the new grade-separated route with a pair of forks.

Interesting. Again there is the trend of removing roundabouts in urban areas and replacing with cross junctions. In Dublin and Cork same thing. Must be national policy. Quite pronounced in Dublin at the moment. Having said that we don't have the same volume/density of them that the UK or France have for example.

NIRS mentioned in another thread removing them is better for pedestrians which I absolutely agree with.

Motorway order applied for today. The interesting characteristics of the scheme are the bridge over the River Corrib, the viaduct and the tunnels.

Project receives planning approval with a few conditions
All that is needed now is €600m and away we go.

About time indeed, however it'll be years before there are shovels in the ground. It still has to clear government hoops and also there are sizable NIMBY challenges piling up against it, as well as green-agenda legal challenges.

That's a shame, given how it could've relieved the dang city.

Not dissimilar to the Stonehenge and A38 Derby schemes in England. Has the Planning Board re-examined the scheme yet, and is there any indication how it’s likely to go??
