On the subject of bagging them all - if you could stay awake and have an endless fuel supply to drive every motorway in one go where do you start and in which order do you do them in ?

I haven't been to Northern Ireland. In Great Britain, I still need to do these (possibly again to be sure!):

M32
M49 ?
M57 ?
M69
M73
M77
M271
M275
M876

A48(M)
A627(M)
I've been busy this last 2 years and can now cross off most of the above list. Getting lost around Glasgow helped with the M77! Going to Southampton and Portsmouth ticked off two motorways and the Itchen toll bridge. A627(M) - Rochdale, what a rundown town. Did the M32 when getting petrol on the way to Wales but still managed not to get the M49 or A48(M) - another time!
I think a detour towards Liverpool to take in the M57 and a tour up the coast thereabouts is on the cards for later this year.

Norn Irn - I was on a coach when we covered the M1, M2, M3 and M5. Lots to explore out there!

Not at all, if you live in the South West and regularly drive to Dover!

[My list is motorways I've driven in their entirety; I've been on M20, but only south of M26].

I've done the A167(M) in its entirety, not much I know, but a big thing not long after passing my test, the M57 and M58. Being quite far from the main network makes it difficult.

It certainly sounds like you are very well-travelled. If it is a case of just simply driving on at least part of each motorway the shortest ones will obviously be more difficult to "bag". The M6 for example could be ticked off by driving on it anywhere whether it's in Birmingham or in Lancashire, whereas for the two outstanding motorways visits specifically to Portsmouth and Dunfermline would be required.

As I have said before, I have not yet learned to drive. However as a passenger I have so far travelled on the following motorways:

A1(M)
M4
M6
M6 Toll
M8
M9*
M40
M42
M60
M61
M73
M74
A74(M)
M77
M80
M90
A404(M)
A823(M)
M876
M898

I have covered the entire length of the motorways in bold.

*According to my parents, we visited Edinburgh at least once while I was at an age too young for me to remember and from where we were living at the time, an outstanding section of the M9 that I do not remember travelling on would have been covered. It's probably a safe assumption to make.

In fact I'm only missing very short sections of M8, M9 and M80, plus the length of the M77, to have completed every M-road in Great Britain.

I've been seeing this thread roll along for a while and just had a look that I seem to indeed have covered the whole UK network, including NI. I'm trying to think what was the last stretch.

Curiously the M50 was one of the first, in 1966, as a kid, and I then didn't use it again for more than 50 years until driving down it recently, needing to get from Droitwich to Ross. If we count driving only, that seems it.
