No, only the M26 has ever been called the M26. The M25 predates it by six or seven years.
However, if you go back to when it was being planned, what is now the M26 was at one stage referred to as part of the M25. I remember seeing references to "M25 Godstone - Wrotham".
Must have been fairly early planning. The driver location signs for the M26 have their zero point at J5 of the M25, but are denoted as the K and L carriageways rather than the A and B carriageways.

Not really. It was the binning of the Ringways and the bodging together of Ringways 3 and 4 into today's M25 that created the M26.

The South Orbital Road was always planned to head to Wrotham until that point.

Driven but not full length

M54 (not gone westwards past A41), M6 (M1 to J40), M62 (Missing A1 (M) to M18), M60 (Not done eastern side from M62 to Stockport), M56 (Missing M53 to A494), A627 (M) (not gone north from M62).

I believe the only motorway in England I have not driven is the M50.

Also not driven on any motorway in Scotland as I have only been to Edinburgh and went up the A1, so I could say I had driven the full length of the A1.
Well in the subsequent 6 and half years, I have now driven the full length of the M6, both ways and the M50 both ways, so all motorways apart from the M181 in England and Wales driven.

In two visits to Scotland have added A74(M) whole length, M74 (J13 to J4), M73 (Whole length), M80 (J4 to M9 J9), M9 (J9 to J11 and J1a to M8 J2), M8 (J1 to J2 and J8 to J30), M898, M90 full length including former M85, so only M876 and M77 to go.

M606
M621
M898
A1(M)
A3(M)
A14(M)
A38(M)
A48(M) - current and former routes (the Port Talbot section as a passenger as they don't let 5 year olds drive cars....)
A58(M)
A64(M)
A74(M)
A308(M)
A329(M)
A404(M)

A627(M) All except the western spur

My most recent acquisitions - A627(M) - August 2021 as a passenger in a car my son was test driving (and now owns).
M66 and the bit of the M65 I've been on - May 2021 on holiday heading for the Forest of Bowland.
M606 - July 2020 - heading for a test drive for another car which my son didn't buy.
M180/M181 - pre-pandemic - taking the scenic route home from York via Beverley, then the Humber Bridge, then following the sat-nav south via Lincoln.

Missing
M53

A1077(M)

There's an obvious gap around Liverpool - I've never been there so I am missing the M62 west of the M6, the M53, M57 and M58. When I collect those, I'll only have a few short lengths to complete the network in England and Wales.

Very unusual, though not impossible, to have done M26 but not M20.
Since that list in 2017, I have completed the M20. I've also completed the M9, M11, M65, M74, M80 and M90. Of the major motorways, I think I'm just missing the tail end of the M8 west of the M898 (which I seem to have missed off the original list) to get the whole set.

Then I'll have to start ticking off the fiddly little ones, which might take some time because they're dotted all over the place, and many are in places I never go!

I think the full length of it is only of much use to people who are travelling between London and Kent. If you live west of London, you'll use M26-M20; if you live north of London, it's more likely to be Dartford Crossing-A2-M2.

Hence why I was missing the first part of M20 between M25 and M26 until I had to go out of my way to do it! Similarly, I had to go out of my way to do the section of M25 between A2 and M26.

I think it depends which part of Kent you are going to. From north of London to the Channel Tunnel or Folkstone, Ashford or Maidstone it would probably be M25-M20.

I reckon I'm nearly complete - I've certainly not been on the M77 or M26. I've done a tiny bit of the M53 (M56 to the Cheshire Oaks junction). I can't remember ever being on the M57 or M58, for some reason I've only ever been to Liverpool once, and that was for anyway game at Everton in the League Cup (York drew 1-1, but won in the home leg, how we've fallen!).

Northern Ireland is looking a little poor on my list... just the M2 and M22. I might have accidentally drive the M3 in its entirety as that bit of Belfast confused me.

All I'm missing in Northern Ireland is the M12. A long way to go to drive a mile or so of tarmac....

In the Republic, I've done all of M1, M2, M3, M4 and M50, and I'm only missing the Limerick bypass on the M7.

I had done all of the M11 and M18 as they existed when I lived over there, but they keep building new bits so I've got some catching up to do - the M17 simply didn't exist back then! And while the M8 and M9 did, I was never able to get anywhere near them.

I've got a way to go. Not ideal being down in the south west! Very close to having M1 (missing M25 to MK) and M6 (missing M1 to M42) completed. I only need a tiny bit of M20, and the M90 eastern branch to bag those too.

In full:
M2, M4, M5, M9, M26, M27, M32, M40, M42, M45, M48, M49, M54, M69, M73, A3(M), A66(M), A74(M), A329(M), A404(M)

In part:
M1, M3, M6, M8, M18, M20, M25, M53, M56, M74, M80, M90, M271, A1(M)

Not yet:
M6(Toll), M11, M23, M50, M55, M57, M58, M60, M62, M61, M65, M66, M67, M77, M180, M181, M275, M602, M606, M621, M876, M898, A8(M), A14(M), A48(M), A57(M), A58(M), A64(M), A92(M), A167(M), A168(M), A194(M), A195(M), A308(M), A601(M), A627(M), A635(M), A666(M), A823(M), A1058(M), A1077(M)

Prior to Covid I'd chalked up a fair few European motorways too (a few of these are the entire route, most just sections):
France:
A1, A4, A16, A25, A26, A27, A31, A33, A35, A104, A216
Belgium:
A3, A7, A8, A10, A14, A15, A16, A17, A18, A19, A26, A27, A602, R0
Germany:
A8, A96
Austria:
A1, A10, A12, A14
Switzerland:
A1, A2, A3, A4, A4a, A8, A13, A14
Portugal:
A1, A3, A4, A11, A20, A24, A28, A29, A41, A44
Romania:

Re: Motorways - who's bagged them all.....

Post by Helvellyn »

Ive got a lot missing, but just a question about what counts - when you say the whole length does it have to have been in one go? Mind you, even without that I'm now trying to think whether I've ever stayed on the motorway through M6 J40, so I might be missing a few hundred yards of it. I'll have to carry on to 41 the next time, just in case!
