Is there any point in keeping the old bridge open to traffic? Especially as the burden of its maintenance will now fall on local authorities, who could probably do without the hassle and expense.

In the original plans the original bridge was only to remain for cyclists, pedestrians and agricultural/field access, with bollards/gates to control access.
Built for comfort, not speed.

It's close to doubled. Even by Welsh governance standards that is mind-blowing. Has the scope massively expanded or did they understate the costs to please the accountants originally?

I'm guessing the Welsh Govt have had to work out how to stop the railway bridge immediately to the south flooding. I couldn't find any specific plans etc. on their site.

More importantly, if the old bridge is being kept for local access and as a heritage structure, how will the new bridge works prevent the old bridge from being flooded again??

I wonder if Mark Drakeford assumed the role of Planning Inspector for this one??

Because

1: The old bridge itself doesn't actually flood, its the approach from Machynlleth across the flood plain that does, the new bridge and embankment sorts that.

and

2: The real problem with the old bridge is that its a 90 Left/Right to get to/from the A487 or A493 which trucks can't always negotiate, leading to the bridge parapet being knocked in to the river, then extracted again, rebuilt and generally knocked back down within six months.

As mentioned, the old bridge is being retained for pedestrian and cycle access and IIRC for agricultural access to the fields near the river.

And it's also grade II* listed, meaning that the authority would have to have a fairly good reason for letting it fall to pieces through failure to maintain it....

Construction should have commenced in the summer but delayed due to COVID 19. No revised start date has been given.

I see it has gone from being the £24 million bridge of rhyds' five year old thread title to being a £46 million bridge today.

I suppose that's just in the nature of things.

That's good to read. I'm hoping that vegetation clearance has already been done. With the nesting season between March and August, they wouldn't be able to do much before the autumn!

Work has started - see link below to see a traffic camera view. The view by the eco-park shows initial construction of the 'tie in' south of the bridge and contrary to the caption, the view is looking north, not south. Work will take '110 weeks' according to the signs I saw when I drove through yesterday.

Here is a video from last summer! ; https://youtu.be/WPDJ_Ag7IBc . Video arrives from the road from Forge so the roadworks don't start until around 5 minutes and 20 secs, when also a train leaves the station  .... a drive past the works to the CAT turn and back past them...... though the view of the works is limited from the forward facing camera.

GSV has been updated Nov/Dec 2021. Good views of the northern and southern 'tie ins'.
