M62/M606 Chain Bar Interchange

Re: M62/M606 Chain Bar Interchange
Interpeak it's no picnic. And even with zero traffic a freeflow link would cut out five sets of traffic lights and also be significantly shorter. With the traffic light forest and unusual geometry (nearly a u-turn to get between the the no. 1 and 2 cities in West Yorkshire) it looks like almost the best case you could imagine for freeflow. I can only suppose that for whatever reason (geotechnical, ecology, utilities, etc) what they were planning to do is far more difficult and expensive than anticipated.
Re: M62/M606 Chain Bar Interchange
Probably more the realisation that it will suck traffic off the A647 to the extent that the M62 will be utterly screwed traffic wise... off-peak it is annoying but not congested. You provide free-flow links and the shift from other routes will wipe out any benefit as you will have seven lanes trying to merge into four eastbound. Good luck with that.

There is a brownfield development planned in the triangle where the freeflow links would go. And a councillor wants it to have direct access to the motorways too!

I don’t know if you read far enough down the article, but the councillor proposing this is the Green Party candidate for Mayor of West Yorkshire.

The estate agent has the "floorplan". Fortunately it does look like what's currently planned is north of the power lines, so the freeflow link should not be impeded. There are also some minor changes to the layout, including where Bradford Road joins Chain Bar. Possibly HE okayed this under the assumption that the freeflow would be built and will now be stuck with an even more congested junction.

Nice find! There’s a smooth curve marked on that plan that looks remarkably like an outline of the land required for free-flow links to and from the east, but I can’t tell if it’s an actual property boundary (indicating that the land has already been acquired for the scheme at some point in the past) or whether it’s some sort of development line for planning purposes.

Re: M62/M606 Chain Bar Interchange
And nice spot! Seems to include a generous left turn - otherwise no need for the boundary to run parallel to the southbound M606, which is presumably for the diverge earthworks.
Re: M62/M606 Chain Bar Interchange
It also cuts in towards the M62 quite abruptly at the top of the plan, at the point the motorway embankment ends and it enters cutting, which makes perfect sense if it’s the outline of space required for a sliproad built on fill.
I have, somewhere, a hard copy of the M606 freeflow links plans from about 20 years ago. If I can lay my hands on it I’ll scan it. It’d be interesting to see whether it matches up.

Another big shed at Chain Bar, this time between the junction and Scholes. Thank heavens that there's so much surplus capacity If NH had a bit of gumption they'd have made all this development conditional on contributions to the freeflow links.
