Re: Lowest signed bridge?
Suitably impressed. Where is it?
I came across a low one in Bedford some years ago (maybe 5'6?) on the NCN51 route but can't work out where it would have been. There's this pair at 5'8 and 6'3 though on the current route.

Re: Lowest signed bridge?
It's somewhere in London on NCN1, this is an article from 2008, the metric signage has been added since then http://www.aviewfromthecyclepath.com/20 ... udget.html
Re: Lowest signed bridge?
Think the lowest is near Kirkintolloch but I can't find it on SABRE atm.

Here's one that's almost as low and very narrow.

Re: Lowest signed bridge?
Bridge at Berkswell under the railway is 7'0 and that has plenty of scrape marks on it.
Casino Manager: "It was a good night. Nothing Unusual."
Harold Shand: "Nothing unusual," he says! Eric's been blown to smithereens, Colin's been carved up, and I've got a bomb in me casino, and you say nothing unusual ?"

Re: Lowest signed bridge?
was going to mention that one. If you pan round there's also what I assume are old slip road stubs? But if you go to google earth and follow the "slips" towards the tunnels past the , there appears to be access on the beach, and across the railway line until we get the the tunnels. Any ideas?wrinkly wrote:Here's one that's almost as low and very narrow.

This one in Atherstone is the lowest one I can remember driving under.

Theere were never slip roads there. They are for local access. Maybe to maintain the railway?drpsg wrote:was going to mention that one. I knew it from my childhood days. Went through it recently and terrified the wife (and myself) - modern cars are much larger than the family Austin 1100!
Re: Lowest signed bridge?
A low 6' 6'' in Carnoustie might qualify?

I'm sure there are more on that strech of the line, but I'm struggling to get Google Maps to run.

Re: Lowest signed bridge?
The lowest one I have driven under. I was a bit worried about my clearance, even in a normal car!

Re: Lowest signed bridge?
The old LNER put a number of these in underneath their railway lines closely parallel to busy level crossings in the 1930s-40s to overcome traffic delays. Quite a number have now gone in the general replacement of the crossings themselves by proper bridges. Possibly the best known remaining one, with overheight detectors, is at Ely station on the A142.

That is signed 9'0". There was a MUCH lower (and narrower) one, now gone, along the same line at Hoddesdon in Herts, which was only 5'0". That was a real challenge. Land Rovers couldn't use it.

Re: Lowest signed bridge?
4'9'', which would suggest you're right about it being the lowest. I keep meaning to check it out. I'm not sure if I'd have the nerve to drive through it, though.Bryn666 wrote:Think the lowest is near Kirkintolloch but I can't find it on SABRE atm.

1.3m or 4'9". Most unusual to have a tunnel where most people of adult height would be unable to walk under.

Re: Lowest signed bridge?
I always thought that this 5'-0 in Ilfracombe was the lowest - possibly still England's lowest though?
Re: Lowest signed bridge?
My first thought was of Atherstone too, but this one in Neath is a foot lower (and is perhaps the lowest in Wales?). It's also rather spooky to drive under as it's rather long (feels more like a tunnel than a bridge) and has a bend in the middle!Big L wrote:This one in Atherstone is the lowest one I can remember driving under.
P.S. I see from a map dated 1878 that this bridge was originally known (appropriately enough) as Dark Arch. At that time it passed beneath 14-15 lines of railway track -- of which just two survive: the rest of the former railway land above the bridge is now devoted to car parking, private and public.
Re: Lowest signed bridge?
If the signs are accurate it's the same as the one in the OP.DavidBrown wrote:I always thought that this 5'-0 in Ilfracombe was the lowest - possibly still England's lowest though?
Re: Lowest signed bridge?
There was a 5'0 bridge under the railway near Hoddesdon which I did drive under once. I'm glad the aerial was down at the time!
It has since been bypassed with a large bridge that serves the local truck traffic much better than the level crossing.

Here's a lower one in Wales (5ft6"):Viator wrote:My first thought was of Atherstone too, but this one in Neath is a foot lower (and is perhaps the lowest in Wales?). It does have a level crossing as a diversion but it looks a strange setup - it crosses 4 tracks yet has manual gates to open at either side! One of the gates even appears to open onto one of the tracks!
