A27 - East of Lewes £75M consultation

Post by GeekyJames »

Highways England have now begun consultation on planned improvements to the East of Lewes section of the A27. Overall it's mostly junction improvements with a small bypass of Selmeston. No mention of the long proposed Folkington link to complete the Polegate bypass, just widening of the existing A22/A27 duplex.

Has had a bit of discussion in this thread but probably worth its own.

Even HE say in the brochure that a longer term study will look into the feasibility of a 'proper' bypass, much like the 1990s scheme.
I'm not familiar with the road but it does seem to be a lot of money for what is essentially tinkering (still have side road access, crossings, lights etc) so I'd suggest that £75m is better spent on another scheme or set aside for a proper improvement.

We essentially have the same situation here as Carland-Chiverton on the A30, and that's getting a proper solution (apart from the simply awful Chiverton junction which I will be commenting on!!)

Much as expected apart from no bypass for Selmeston...

Proposals to upgrade Selmeston junction have been withdrawn after no options could be found that would deliver a worthwhile benefit without having an unacceptable impact on the South Downs national park.

You don't get much for £75m nowadays.

If the consultants are clever they will get to spend most of it on their design work, and there will be nothing left for the actual construction.

Never let the truth get in the way of a recurring rant against designers. For those that do not know, the typical scheme development and design costs account for about 10% of the construction budget excluding lands costs. Construction costs will far outweigh any design work subject to sensible project management on the scheme.

I suppose the benefit of what's been approved, with the majority of funding seemingly going on dualling at Polegate, is that the benefit to motorists leaving Eastboune will not be lost if the offline route between Lewes and Polegate ever gets approved.

Wouldn’t it be better to cancel everything except the dualliing at Polegate?? So the money can be saved for a better plan/RIS2??

If the intended D2 link to the A27 from the Polegate bypass was built, the A2270/A27 bit wouldn't need dualling. The A22 has already been routed away from there.

The money would be spent elsewhere and you would take your chances on a scheme in RIS2 which would have to compete against other bigger schemes with possibly better value for money.

The value for money scoring that Highways England uses is a complete joke anyway. It suggests that implementing a smart motorway on a road to benefit rush hour commuters where road links are already very good is better value for money than doing dualling, grade separation or bypasses in forgotten parts of the strategic road network.

From experience the A2270 out of Eastbourne is still quite busy, as it's a far more direct route to the A27 west towards Lewes than the A22, and that won't change if the offline route is built.

HE are funding a study into a larger scale dualling scheme alongside the current scheme. Bit of a weird political compromise...

In which case, they need to suspend all spending on the 'live' scheme straight away.
Wish I had £250k to just fritter away....!
