A46 Coventry Junctions upgrade

Re: A46 Coventry Junctions upgrade
Those walls may well explain why the other GSJ is being delayed for now - £50m-£100m was optimistic given both are moderately complex.
I expect there'll be a permanent 50mph through here given the proximity of the petrol station and dealership.

The bridge design is also reminiscent of the many flyovers being built on India's roads at the moment.

Re: A46 Coventry Junctions upgrade
Dealership has closed down, whether anyone moves in remains to be seen.
Casino Manager: "It was a good night. Nothing Unusual."
Harold Shand: "Nothing unusual," he says! Eric's been blown to smithereens, Colin's been carved up, and I've got a bomb in me casino, and you say nothing unusual ?"

Someone needs to tell HE, perfect opportunity to close off that weaving space.

That LILO is also the access for a small number of industrial units, not just the dealership.

Assuming its the Mitsubishi garage that's closed, it's just Fraikin that's left on Oak Tree Close...mattling wrote:That LILO is also the access for a small number of industrial units, not just the dealership.
Looking at Google Maps it could possibly be re-serviced from the end of Progress Close with a small amount of re-jigging.
I did have it in my head that Oak Tree Close plugged into the end of Herald Way but was bollarded off, looks like I imagined it, that was probably the intention once upon a time but the Claybrookes Marsh SSSI would have put paid to it.

There are public information events on Fri and Sat providing an update on the scheme design:

Some info on the revised scheme here:

There's a reference to a preferred route announcement, though it's unclear whether this has actually been made.

It's so.... ugly.
I can see there being some backlash against that one to be honest!

Re: A46 Coventry Junctions upgrade
But how different is it to many other junctions?? They all share relative degrees of ‘ugliness’...Jeni wrote:It's so.... ugly.

Exposed concrete and the "rusty" bridge beams are seemingly the future...

Re: A46 Coventry Junctions upgrade
The retaining walls were supposedly ugly, so they opened up the roundabout with a viaduct, but that's apparently also ugly. What exactly are they supposed to do? Demolish adjacent properties to make space for nicely planted earthworks? Just leave as is with its aesthetically-satisfying queues? Genuine question.

I think the viaduct looks better, tbh. Much more open.jackal wrote:The retaining walls were supposedly ugly, so they opened up the roundabout with a viaduct, but that's apparently also ugly. Re: A46 Coventry Junctions upgrade
I guess it is less of a design change to amend the pillar type, or swap the pre-rusted girders for something painted, than to vary the length of the viaduct in the first place.
However if they had gone for retaining walls, apart from cost, would there be any reason not to try to fancy them up a bit with some interesting brickwork, like on the A444 where it passes Hillfields?

The representation period for the orders has now closed. HE still hoping to start construction in March 2020.

Re: A46 Coventry Junctions upgrade
So if it’s all coming under the Highways Act, I’m guessing it’s well within the road boundaries??

Edit: the problem with replying to posts early in a thread, especially if old, is that yuo get to the end of the thread, and discover things have been over-taken by events...
The layout of the hospital, and especially the approaches, is based on access from Clifford Bridge Road.
The only alternative route would be along the River Sowe and its floodplain, which wouldn't go down too well.
But getting rid of the B4082 doesn't solve the "kink" although without the roundabout it could be smoothed a little bit. Mind you there's not alot of space for a south-bound left-hand diverge if the A46 is to up-and-over, so it would probably have to be a guzunder.
Not convinced.

Re: A46 Coventry Junctions upgrade
Disappointing, IMHO, that the design includes traffic lights on the roundabout from the start. Surley, with the A46 mainline traffic off it, there is no need for lights?jackal wrote: ↑Tue Oct 22, 2019 17:48 The representation period for the orders has now closed.
