There were roadworks there when we drove past in March but apart from a few earthworks not much had been done - I was wondering exactly what they were doing.

I can't really comment as I don't know the junction. However, there must be enough traffic heading between RWB and Wroughton for the powers that be to figure bypassing the roundabout is a good idea. It's interesting that, bar extra lanes, there aren't any upgrades on the road from Swindon itself.

No there arent any upgrades on the Swindon side of the A3102, but I think thats well served with 4 lanes, lane 1 is for M4 east, lane 2 is for Wroughton and extra capacity for M4 east, lane 3 is for Royal Wootton Bassett and lane 4 is for M4 west.
When I have driven through there its always been easy to find your lane on that approach.
I think the new layout will best serve Royal Wootton Bassett, as all other movements will be close to what they are now. Im not sure either about levels of traffic between Royal Wootton Bassett and Wroughton, but I know this junction can get busy at rush hour.

How long will the temporary layout be in place?

The proposal kind of reminds me of M20 junction 4.

Not sure, that image came from this page, which you have to scroll down to the 4th article to get the info about the M4 J16. There project page has more information and includes a higher quality version of the map I posted yesterday.

I suspect there's a full stop missing there, reversing the surface meaning.

Cool looks good like that, of course its a bit different driving it! I would have preferred a second roundabout for the Wroughton/Wootton Bassett movements, along with a link road to the main roundabout.
