Re: Shortest speed limit
All indicative of the skills shortage and chronic inability to write legal orders.
The problem also is politicians demand changes on road x, roads y and z therefore are outside of the scope of scheme so bean counters whinge if you do the obvious housekeeping.
More reason to have regional roads authorities with trained and licensed directors of highways.

Re: Shortest speed limit
Well of course the A491 was originally NSL, however Worcs CC couldn't resist cutting the limit. But they still forgot about the side road.

The same problem again.
"Reduce the speed limit on the A491"
"You haven't done side roads"
"Job sheet says A491"
Let me go find a brick wall.

Re: Shortest speed limit
I think the dual carriageway at the end obviously used to be NSL, but they changed that without thinking about the side road!

Sorry to interrupt your council bashing, but the side road speed limit came after the dual carriageway speed limit.Chris Bertram wrote:Well of course the A491 was originally NSL, however Worcs CC couldn't resist cutting the limit. But they still forgot about the side road.

If you're trying to use that as a means of defending Worcs CC, I'm not sure that you've chosen a good example!Jeni wrote:Sorry to interrupt your council bashing, but the side road speed limit came after the dual carriageway speed limit.Chris Bertram wrote:Well of course the A491 was originally NSL, however Worcs CC couldn't resist cutting the limit. Re: Shortest speed limit
Just be glad neither of you lives in W Yorkshire. There are some roads with speeds cameras every 100 metres or so, including some where the limit alters between 30 and 40 without any noticeable change in the condition of the road; quite unbelievable.Chris Bertram wrote:If you're trying to use that as a means of defending Worcs CC, I'm not sure that you've chosen a good example!Jeni wrote:

Re: Shortest speed limit
Here's a nice tiny one in Gainsborough. The unusual signed 60 on a dual carriageway increases to 70 for a few yards before the dual carriageway ends and the limit goes back to 60.

Presumably because you shouldn't be signing a 60 limit on a single-carriageway road?the cheesecake man wrote: ↑Mon Nov 22, 2021 13:21 Here's a nice tiny one in Gainsborough. Re: Shortest speed limit
Yes, but the signs would be better sited at the end of the central reservation making it 60 throughout. If there was a talivan enforcing the 60 limit and you were photographed in that tiny section of 70 NSL then it would all sorts of problems for the local scameraship. It's as bad as that tiny gap in the no stopping regulations on the A40 at the border near Monmouth.Chris Bertram wrote: ↑Mon Nov 22, 2021 13:31Presumably because you shouldn't be signing a 60 limit on a single-carriageway road?the cheesecake man wrote: ↑Mon Nov 22, 2021 13:21 Here's a nice tiny one in Gainsborough. No camera partnership would be stupid enough to try and enforce in that small distance because they know it wouldn't stand up in court.Truvelo wrote: ↑Mon Nov 22, 2021 16:05Yes, but the signs would be better sited at the end of the central reservation making it 60 throughout. Re: Shortest speed limit
Driving through some roadworks on the A61 yesterday, I passed a temporary 30 sign on my left that was less than a car's length in front of a similarly temporary NSL sign on the right.
That wasn't the length of the speed limit itself, but it was the shortest distance I've ever seen between two signs indicating two different limits.

Re: Shortest speed limit
It's quite common in Scotland to have some very short limits where there's a drop from 60 to 20 - there's usually a short bit of 30 in between. Here's an example.
Re: Shortest speed limit
30 > NSL at the end of the B4247, the road ahead is a bridleway according to Swansea public rights of way map and a sign near the start. So about 44m/143ft of NSL at the end of the public highway...
30 > 20 > 30 due to this recent speed limit addition as you go into London Borough of Merton, goes back to 30 a short distance up the road. This is because Kingston Borough (behind on GSV) is not as crazy reducing all the limits to 20 as Merton is. That's
40 > 30 for this small cul-de-sac up to the Robin Hood Gate for Richmond Park. That's 25m/84ft
20 > 30 > 20 for the short Weston Park in Kingston (they forgot to sign it as 20 at the exit of the road. That's 73m/238ft

Re: Shortest speed limit
When all the speed limits to the south west of Chepstow changed they forgot about the southern section of Conway Drive. The NSL lasts until the roundabout in the distance.
British & Irish cities driven in - 48/75
England - 36/52, Scotland - 7/7, Wales - 5/6, NI - 0/5, RoI - 0/5

This 30 zone last to the end of the picket fence (just past the approaching car)

Re: Shortest speed limit
This one near Haverfordwest is only a few hundred yards long. Same with this one near Bexley, sandwiched between two 30s.
Re: Shortest speed limit
And if you look at where the car is you will that before that there is a 40 zone. Such stacked zones are quite common in rural areas. The idea is to gradually slow vehicles approaching a built up area rather than have a sudden transition from NSL to 30 or in the case you show to 20.

Most evidence suggests they don't work though.KeithW wrote: ↑Wed Nov 24, 2021 09:43And if you look at where the car is you will that before that there is a 40 zone.
