The A1 needs to be upgraded to handle the traffic from the North East to London. Given the A19 from Thirsk to the York ring road is S2 and that the ring road is already overloaded I dont see a cat in hells chance of anyone going that way unless you held them at gunpoint. Then there is the little matter of rebuilding the junction between the existing A19 and A168 at Thirsk. Actually the few times I have gone via York I found it quicker to go right through the city centre and round the inner ring road. I was of course heading for Teesside so the A19 at Thirsk was on route as it were and I havent gone that way since the A1(M) from Wetherby to Walshford and Dishforth was opened in 2005.

Quite simply, this will never happen - much as it would be welcomed by many, the outrage from others would be loud! Pushing through an on-line upgrade is hard enough; a green-field motorway would be nigh-on impossible now.
And that is before you consider a route that would have to avoid Drax power station, squeeze past Skipwith Common and the Derwent Valley NNRs - without obliterating North Duffield

Slight slow down on the M18 with people merging into lane 1 to exit, other than that, sailed right through

York and North Yorkshire east of the A1 wouldn't account for much of the traffic between Redhouse and Darrington. Google do this from time to time, a few years ago the A64 all became the A64(M) right through leeds to Scarborough they sorted it within 3 months!

Thanks! So they aren't as far as preferred routes etc yet. Build another one alongside and put a D3M carriageway on it. Convert the existing D2 a single D3M carriageway. Thelwall Viaduct carries the M6 over the Manchester Ship Canal and the River Mersey near Warrington, crossing the traditional boundary between Cheshire and Lancashire as it does so. It originally opened in 1963 as part of the Warrington to Preston section of the motorway (now junctions 20 to 29). As I understand it the existing bridge is not a single bridge but two bridges side by side. Not impossible for that to form a single side of a D3M of course.

Likewise, I can remember when most of the junctions on the A1 were roundabouts and several hair raising at grade junctions. Replacing the roundabouts and closing some of the worst at grades was one big improvement to improve journey times and safety, ( Always recall as a boy being in a car having to use an at grade junction on the A1 to get to a village called Scorton and it being nerve wracking even for the local who was driving the Chevette).Chris Bertram wrote: ↑Wed Sep 22, 2021 18:04 Ha! The section of the A1 near Sandy looks like a suburban D2, not a major road carrying traffic from London to the East Midlands.
