NI: A1 Banbridge improvements
Legislation was published today to stop up gaps in the central reservation, as well as various accesses onto the A1 around Banbridge.

Re: A1 Banbridge improvements
Glad to see this going ahead. Given that it's a cross-border trunk route, that bit of the A1 is a dangerous anachronism, like the old A74.
Re: A1 Banbridge improvements
It all helps, although perhaps this is not the worst part of the road, being 1970s rather than 1960s.
Am I correct that the closures fall short of the Manse Road junction , linking to the A50, or did I miss this?

Yes, this scheme doesn't close that gap.bothar wrote:It all helps, although perhaps this is not the worst part of the road, being 1970s rather than 1960s.

Re: A1 Banbridge improvements
No doubt because they would need to build a slip road of some sort on the other side.c2R wrote:Yes, this scheme doesn't close that gap.bothar wrote:It all helps, although perhaps this is not the worst part of the road, being 1970s rather than 1960s.

Re: A1 Banbridge improvements
I thought this was the A1 'Great North Road' in England for a moment, until I saw the PDFs and orders. Its a shame they arent doing anything about the A1 central reservation gaps and flat junctions between the bits of A1(M).

It might be no harm to change the title to NI A1 ....

Re: A1 Banbridge improvements
I'd assumed that Banbridge made it sufficiently obvious...

Only for people with a working knowledge of small towns in Northern Ireland.
Re: A1 Banbridge improvements
No I assumed it was somewhere up north near Scotland! The A1 is such a long road that the subject should be prefixed, otherwise people will naturally assume its referring to the British roadc2R wrote:I'd assumed that Banbridge made it sufficiently obvious...

Re: A1 Banbridge improvements
Given Banbridge is home of this really old GSJ surely it's a prerequisite of SABRE membership to know where it is?

Re: A1 Banbridge improvements
Although not intended as a GSJ it has all the hallmarks of one and therefore I'd say is definitely the oldest in the country; it's a side road connected by four roads with the main road going through a cutting.

Re: A1 Banbridge improvements
The bigger issue is that there is now an obvious gap in the combined Irish motorway system.
Time for the M1 to go to the border and create a new M4 to Dungannon.

Yes but the Cut was designed to remove a steep gradient for horses. The fact it is identical to a diamond is a happy accident.

It would be an 'N' road if in the Republic.Mark Hewitt wrote:And I assumed it was somewhere down South! Never heard of Banbridge.James wrote:No I assumed it was somewhere up north near Scotland! Re: A1 Banbridge improvements
Point of information, it isn't medieval, but early 19th century (1834). There probably wasn't of anything much there in medieval times, never mind need for a GSJ!exiled wrote:Is that the only medieval GSJ still in use in these islands?vlad wrote:Given Banbridge is home of this really old GSJ surely it's a prerequisite of SABRE membership to know where it is?
It still remains a better design than the bypass.

Of course that's what should happen, just as the M2 should go to Derry. But the DUP would never have either.Bryn666 wrote:The bigger issue is that there is now an obvious gap in the combined Irish motorway system.
