Odd pedestrian/cycle crossing

Post by Herned »

Following on from the discussion around cycle infrastructure etc. this is something I have been meaning to ask for a while. This is a road next to Bristol harbour, which is a busy cycle and pedestrian route from the south side of the city centre towards the station. The road is marked with Give Way lines giving priority to cyclists, but these apply to pedestrians? Cars generally do stop to let people cross, but I can't think of anywere else where give way lines are used for pedestrians instead of a zebra or signalled crossing - is this even permitted?

Prior to 2016 cyclists would not have been able to cross there if it was a zebra without dismounting. They'd still need a parallel crossing even with the change to the regulations.

Therefore this layout was used, regularly. It makes sense if you take a cycle track to be another form of road, which if you're designing it properly it is, rather than a shared fudge with pedestrians.

Thanks, I have seen this elsewhere for cycle routes, it was more the pedestrian side of it I was wondering about - I'm not aware of anywhere else where give way lines are used for a pedestrian crossing

Ah yes, that's unusual with it being shared fudge.

Mind you Bristol have some weird ideas about what constitutes sane traffic engineering... the south link road screams to mind.

Which bit?
a) Turning a quiet suburban road into part of the ring road?
b) Building a brand-new roundabout with traffic lights from the opening day?
c) Sticking a roundabout in place of an existing GSJ?
d) any other weirdness I've missed?
