Stumbled Across A Ford

Post by AAndy »

You know when you've spied a road on a map or somewhere and you have to go there.... For around 20 years I had been meaning to use this 1 mile long c class road that joins two A roads, the A474 & A483 near Maerdy, Llandeilo.... but never got around to it.. I convinced myself today it was enroute!

Not for anything other than to see what it was about.... and came across the gem of a low bridge and cobbled ford all together.

Happy days.

Looks well preserved regarding the cobbled area. Wouldn't like to try it as a short cut between the two A roads though once this dry spell has finished.

Looks idyllic - hopefully you'll put one of them up for Photo of the Month?!

I guess they expect you to work back from the 9' bridge height

I think it's listed there as Fairfach.

That's the one. Puzzlingly, I can't see anything - not a town, village, hamlet or even a farmhouse - labelled as Fairfach in the vicinity on the map.

Ffairfach (Welsh spelling) village is about two miles north east of the ford.
You can find any answers you want on the Internet. Some of them may even be correct.

I see it now. Usually Lee Chapman chooses a name somewhat more local to each ford. In fact Rhyd-y-ffynnon, the name of a nearby farm, would have been a much better name, especially as "rhyd" is the Welsh for ford.
