Pedestrian Phase on Bridge with no Footway

Post by A303Chris »

While out and about yesterday I saw this unusual arrangement on a bridge on Cool Oak Lane, Hendon where it crosses the Brent Reservoir. It is a pedestrian phase on a bridge without a footway. The pedestrian presses the button, both traffic heads go red, the green man comes on and the pedestrians cross the bridge without traffic. I have not seen this before, are there any other examples around the country like this?

That's a surprise I wasn't expecting there to be another example

I remember that bridge before the signals. It was, err, terrifying. The signals went in as part of a S278 to build a housing estate when an old mill between the canal and railway was demolished. The bridge over the railway is narrow but lacks any signal control.

Seamons Road, Altrincham. You can see the separate pedestrian lights, on red. The pedestrian pushbutton is some way beyond the vehicle stop line in each direction.

Pinfold Lane, Penkridge.

I'm sure I've seen something similar where the road goes under a railway arch and makes a 90-degree turn. The combination of poor (essentially non-existent) visibility and the footways stopping either side of the bend means peds need to walk in the road.

A830 Borrodale Bridge

And of course, the infamous Pulpit Rock signals in the A82 had a PBU for NMUs.

That one simply puts a demand in for the vehicle phase so horse riders can cross on green.

There's an unusual sign in the link that says "No through road for HGV". It isn't very clear which road it relates to.

Similar idea A780 near Moffat

However I believe this one is to allow for an extended green phase for slower traffic rather than to create a separate phase on demand.

That bridge over the Isla used to have push buttons for cyclists.

Love to work out the logic behind the "Cyclists Dismount" signs. Surely the layout is such that even a fairly slow cyclist will be clear through the bridge anyway? I'm guessing the suggestion (because they haven't made it explicit) is to dismount and go through as a pedestrian. And not to dismount, but go through walking on a vehicle phase.

So, cycling along, having gone past the green light, you're supposed to realise the text heavy sign is for you, read it, then stop, still able to see the light on the right but without being flattened by any vehicles behind you, wait for the cycle to come back around, and then cross, with a full cycle's worth of motor traffic behind you? Have I got this right?

Let's blindfold them too. Can't have them looking at the road that they haven't paid for, can we?
