Backs of Signs?
Hi!
Many, many times, when driving along an all– purpose road where directional signing renewal has been carried out, a maker's label (earlier signage often had a small red–bordered triangle) can often be seen on the lower left–hand corner of the rear face of the sign, and I've noticed the larger the label, the less likely it is to be botched or wrong in some way!
From an informal survey, as performed by me whilst driving along:–
A) Signage with a large rectangular white label, light grey on rear;–
Usually HE or recently renewed LA sign of good quality made correctly
B) Medium to dark grey rear face, small rectangular label:–
Liable to have mistakes or the odd botched one!
C) Mid to dark grey, no label on rear:–
Nearly always older signage in need of renewal, hit–or–miss as to wether it was made correctly or botched!
D) Black rear face, small white label
If it's Birmingham, usually a good job done, liable to be botched elsewhere, particularly in the North East in Newcastle/Gateshead and further afield!
E) Dark Green or Brown backs, may or may not have a label
Often used in Solihull and "evironmental–areas", usually correct but seem to attract chavs that bash into 'em and knock them over!
Opinions?

Re: Backs of Signs?
The label is simply the manufacturers details including the date of manufacture, the grade of material and possibly a job reference.
There is no correlation between that and the design of the sign, other than that authorities or contractors might have a preferred supplier, or in some cases their own sign shop.

Re: Backs of Signs?
563 is the TSRGD reference and 'otter' is the legend.
A sign is supposed to have these stickers on the reverse side now to demonstrate compliance with CE marking requirements and also BS:EN 12899. A manufacturer that does not supply this information on the sign itself must send the relevant information to the highway authority which must keep a record of it but this is not a preferred method.
Technically, no CE marking means it isn't a traffic sign and is therefore an unlawful obstruction in the highway. As ever though, nobody seems to care and enforcement (for some reason the domain of trading standards) is non-existent.
Another fine mess...

"Warning! Caution otters!"
"Accuse the other side of that which you are guilty."

There's a sign at my local recycling centre saying "Keep children and pets in your vehicle at all times."
What do you do if you haven't got any children or pets?
Back on the subject of otters: some time ago when driving in the midlands I noticed a pub called the Tame Otter. Eventually I realised the reason for the name.
