Possibly because it's a summit. It allows a bit of overtaking.

There are 3 little D2's between Midhurst and Petworth on the A272. Very useful to get past a lorry, if you are first or second behind it. An even shorter one on the A30 at Hook, now D2/1
Roads and holidays in the west, before motorways.

The tiny bit of D2 on the A49 at Wellington south of Leominster. Formerly just a curiosity, but since some muppets thought the safe, lengthy crawler lanes at Dinmore- the only decent overtaking spot for 40 miles- needed a 50mph limit it has become a very important location for flooring it to get past truck/caravan/40mph driver. Just long enough to hit 70, unless by some miracle you are doing 60 on reaching it when you might make 80.

As well as being useful once the dualling project connects it, in the meantime it enforces the GSJ

There's the D1 at Calderbridge which accesses Sellafield's main gate and seems rather pointless as a wide S2 would do a better job.

If that isn't full of people doing handbrake turns at night then I'll be amazed. Also why on earth does it get priority at that roundabout?! I recall being stumped by that when I last drove through there.

Depends on whetehr you class this as a dual carriageway or a one way round I guess.
I would call that a car park!

Looks like this section of the first one is designed badly!
They should have put the bus stop before the chicane! Cant believe they would choose blocking the road with a bus stop over putting it in the layby!

JohnnyMo wrote: Wed Oct 03, 2018 21:31 I remember a thread which was discussing how long a dual carriage way needed to be to justify a 70 mph speed limit, as apposed to it being a single carriageway with a safety refuge ( normally to allow traffic turning right ). A602 Stevenage Yes I know this is a 40 mph so it remains 40 but it shows what I mean
I would say technically any length of dualled road would carry a default of 70mph if not signed or no street lamps present, although some you would struggle to get to 70mph on if they ended very quickly.

I traversed that on GSV and saw no speed limit signs, so.... 70mph dual carriageway with speed humps!

There must be lots of council estates with short dual carriageways like Intake.
I have websites about: motorway services | Fareham

Or if that doesn't count, there's always Appley Lane, Ryde, Isle of Wight!

This looks like a short section of dual carriageway, but is actually two parallel S2 roads, both of which are two-way.

Because it looks like a dual carriageway and the northbound lane of Cross Street West is often blocked by parked cars and vans, it's not unusual for vehicles to turn out onto Pellon New Road from the wrong side of the road. And as the junction is directly outside the local test centre, doing this is one of the easiest ways to fail your driving test within the first minute.

What's the story for that one, then? How did it come about?
