Re: Favourite and least favourite roads
My favourite road is a tie between the A838, A890 and the A894 which has stunning scenery and is all in all a great drive.
My least favourite road is the A49 just because it feels overloaded in places and hardly has anywhere to safely overtake slower moving traffic.

Re: Favourite and least favourite roads
I doubt you'll find anyone who is a fan of the M6 between J11A and J19.
It's a national embarrassment.

Re: Favourite and least favourite roads
I'll take that as the M6 in Cheshire being the least favourite - not many people seem to like it!

Re: Favourite and least favourite roads
I would also nominate M6 J4-21a as a least favourite road but it's not really a "road" in the transportation sense.

B1257 Helmsley to Stokesley is my favourite. (Must be South to North.)
A1 from Wadworth to Darrington is my least favourite, any direction!!!!

I really enjoy driving on the A74(M). Most of the time it's relatively quiet, the scenery is fantastic and you can just bowl along at 70 mph, it's probably the most destressed motorway I've driven on.
OTOH the M62, a very busy, nasty motorway, that apart from the section through the Pennines, passes through some of the ugliest countryside in Britain. Twice was enough for me.

Re: Favourite and least favourite roads
It's cliched, but the A68 north of Bishop Auckland for the best and the A1/A1(M) between the M62 and M18 for the worst: they're both well-known for a reason!
Re: Favourite and least favourite roads
How could you hate that? It's one of the most scenic motorways in Britain?
Re: Favourite and least favourite roads
Are we talking about the same M6? I know it as 25 miles of cuttings and roadworks. The Thelwall Viaduct is pretty scenic but it's only a fraction of the route!

Re: Favourite and least favourite roads
Is the question for me or for Big L?
I don't recall saying anything negative about any part of the M6. I was merely guessing based on trending opinion amongst other members which of the two roads mentioned in the post was Big L's least favourite as it was left open to interpretation.

Re: Favourite and least favourite roads
Another vote for the A68 as favorite, although only so far north as Jedburgh; after that point the speed cameras multiply and there is too much local traffic, so it all become a bit of a bind.
Least favorite road, well collection of roads, is the A90, M90, M9 and M8 from the Queensferry Crossing to the Edinburgh bypass; it's a ridiculously contorted route with lots of weaving through badly designed junctions and generally awful driving.

Re: Favourite and least favourite roads
Even before the roadworks, it was straight and dull and tedious and overloaded and potholed. The roadworks might resolve the potholes, at least for a while, but the other problems will persist.

Re: Favourite and least favourite roads
Anyone like the A689, this is a road of complete contrasts from the industrial landscape in Hartlepool to the Pennines? I'd recommend the section from Brampton to Crook, where the road climbs to over 1500 feet on the Cumbria- Durham border and you have the long descent into the Wear Valley. Also since there isn't much traffic, it's made more pleasant.
OTOH this road isn't recommended in the dark and can be dangerous in winter, particularly for two wheel drive vehicles.

Re: Favourite and least favourite roads
Favourite road is the A686 between Penrith and Haydon Bridge - just not in a FWD car as they struggle on the hairpins - in a 4WD car it's an excellent driving road and good scenery as well.
My favourite in any vehicle is the M74 approaching Glasgow from the south - as we're halfway in time to the best bits.
Least favourite is any road within the M25, inluding the M25 itself.

Re: Favourite and least favourite roads
My favourite major/trunk road is the A55; spectacular scenery and the only big issues (Britannia Bridge, two at-grade roundabouts) are being resolved.
I like the A50 (Derby to Stoke), which is just a few junction changes away from being really good.
I quite like the A500 too, although I've never driven it at peak times so perhaps I'm blinkered.
Other favourite roads are the A5 (Llangollen to Bangor), A498, A4080, A4085, A4086, and A5025.
My least favourite road is probably the A511. A dreadfully slow primary route with countless speed cameras. Avoid it if you can.
The A51 between Chester and Nantwich is always a slow crawl through villages, traffic lights, and a couple of speed cameras.
The A5 in North Warwickshire is completely underpowered and unpleasant to drive.
The A46 around Coventry is overloaded, and the grade-separation of the Binley roundabout can't come soon enough.
In general, I hate dreadfully old and dangerous stretches of D2, like the A1 in Lincolnshire, and the A14 in Cambridgeshire, the A46 north of Leicester. And I don't think I've ever enjoyed driving on a UK motorway.

Re: Favourite and least favourite roads
The B1257 is my second favourite. I prefer North to South but usually end up doing both living a few minutes drive from Stokesley
If I really want to make a day of it I come back via Hutton Le Hole, Blakey Ridge, Castleton and Guisborough. Sunday lunch at the Lion Inn sounds like a plan, must look at tomorrows weather forecast

The A686 is OK if you drive carefully, and has some spectacular views.Ruperts Trooper wrote: ↑Sat Nov 03, 2018 11:24 Favourite road is the A686 between Penrith and Haydon Bridge - just not in a FWD car as they struggle on the hairpins - in a 4WD car it's an excellent driving road and good scenery as well.
