A595 Whitehaven: Parton to Sellafield

Post by wrinkly »

This page has appeared on the HE website:

https://highwaysengland.co.uk/projects/ ... ellafield/

As you will see, consultations are starting, with "public information events" from mid-November.

Also this press release has appeared on the DfT website:

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/gove ... rias-roads

However the link in it is just to the general consultations "hub" website, which does not appear to have anything relevant yet.

Presumably there'll be something there by Nov 17th.

"Hub" seems to have become a top buzzword in the last few years.

The consultation opens on Wednesday. I assume online materials will be available then.

It is desperately needed. I live half a mile from the A595 in Whitehaven and the congestion is unbearable. Ideally, when the D2 was built around Distington and Howgate, the logical step would have been a relief road for Whitehaven as well. I know the project has become more difficult due to new housing developments, and there is no space for a D2, but even an S2 by pass would remove half of the traffic on the current A595 and make journey times to Sellafield far quicker.

Consultation now open. I couldn't see any mention of specific proposals in the brochure itself, but the response form indicates that online improvements through Whitehaven have been rejected and a relief road is proposed.

HE are also quoted in the press indicating £200m-£250m for the road.

Clearly we're a long way off anything happening. We'll be lucky to see it in Road Period 2.

The plans to build a new nuclear facility at Sellafield have suffered a major setback as Toshiba has had to pull out:-

Public consultation report published:

https://highwaysengland.co.uk/projects/ ... ellafield/

On page 43 of the report there's a route options map, with the main option extending from the end of the dual carriageway at Howgate to the Egremont Bypass:
