Re: Roundabout with railway in the middle
That’s a very badly designed viaduct. The pillar blocks visibility.

Re: Roundabout with railway in the middle
I doubt they ever considered reopening the railway. The old railway cutting north of the roundabout was filled in, i assume with spoil from the Dalkeith Bypass Construction in the mid 90's. Back then there were plans to dual the A7 between Edinburgh and Galashiels, using parts of the old track bed in some places.

If we're including longabouts then this one in Hatfield counts.
Re: Roundabout with railway in the middle
The Blaydon Bridge roundabout crosses what was the north Tyne branch of the Tyne Valley line, which was closed to freight in 1987 in preparation for the Newcastle western by pass.
Re: Roundabout with railway in the middle
Indeed, in fact a train of empty tanks left Colnbrook for Grain Oil Terminal this morning at 09:40 and a loaded train is in the working timetable for this evening, arriving at the Colnbrook about 23:30. There are also aggregate trains scheduled on weekdays to arrive about 06:30 and leave about 6 hours later. Both of these services are run as required so they won't necessarily be seen every day.Isleworth1961 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 06, 2019 11:57I've read that a new fuel depot serving Heathrow has opened up at Colnbrook, so line has more traffic now.alice wrote: ↑Sun Jan 06, 2019 10:56 There's one through the middle of the M4/M25 junction, which was the Staines & West Drayton railway and is now a short, rarely-used spur serving Colnbrook Industrial Estate: https://www.google.com/maps/@51.4952613 ... Yes, the changes there surprised me when I used it late last year - I used to like the old layout where you could choose your route though it. One major shunt now, and it'll jam up, whereas previously (but obviously depending on where the collision was) you stood a chance of getting round it.
Re: Roundabout with railway in the middle
I think that is one where a driver can easily not notice that they have gone over the ECML. This is not just because they are paying attention to the road and other vehicles.

They’re still there today. Don’t think they’ll be removed until the junction needs resurfacing or somesuch!nowster wrote:Interesting. The tracks were still there in August 2018. https://goo.gl/maps/5sgVCj7cfE82
Re: Roundabout with railway in the middle
This was some ambitious scheme that appeared on Border Lookaround for a week and was never heard of again, possibly as Galashiels is difficult to by pass and the A7 is never terribly busy.22inarow wrote: ↑Wed Jan 09, 2019 14:55 I doubt they ever considered reopening the railway. Just to clarify. The last thing you want is the pier to be passively safe and deform or deflect causing the viaduct to collapse.22inarow wrote: ↑Wed Jan 09, 2019 08:43 There is a relatively new one on the A7 at Eskbank:

I hope the central pier is passively safe!
You have to ensure the pier is designed robustly enough to resist the impact of a vehicle without deformation or collapse.
Any safety barrier protecting the pier could be passively safe so long as the impact can be absorbed without transmission of load into the pier.

Really?! It's better than many others. At least you can see the road ahead from the pulling out point at each entrance.
See the next roundabout up for comparison https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@55.88201 ... 384!8i8192
Or the Broxden Roundabout at Perth, that's got a forest on top!
Re: Roundabout with railway in the middle
Sarcasm seems lost on some people. Safety barriers by their nature are not passively safe as they absorb the energy to slow the vehicle down.RichardA35 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 13, 2019 14:21Just to clarify. My point is there should never be a pier located in the middle of the roundabout. Especially at the bottom of a climbing lane where approach speeds to the roundabout are high, and there is an increased risk of a vehicle overshooting the entry onto the central island.

Re: Roundabout with railway in the middle
I've never had any issues with sight-lines, at Hardengreen. Although, there should be protection for the pier.
To be fair, there is nowhere else to put it. Eliminating it would have resulted in a much longer span, which would have increased cost, due to the extra strengthening that would have been required.22inarow wrote: ↑Wed Jan 09, 2019 08:43 My point is there should never be a pier located in the middle of the roundabout. Again, there is no issue, as speeds are low enough that you don't need to see what is coming from the opposite arm.Big Nick wrote: ↑Sun Jan 13, 2019 16:58 Really?! It's better than many others. At least you can see the road ahead from the pulling out point at each entrance.

The same applies to Broxden, as there is usually always traffic from adjacent arms (which are visible) to indicate that there is traffic coming from the opposite arm. Broxden's issue is that it is so damned busy.

Re: Roundabout with railway in the middle
Cant find a US example with a roundabout but in Columbus Ohio there is railroad that runs right through the centre of the city, through a multi story car parks and has a level crossing, it used to be for vehicles and pedestrians but is now pedestrian only after an accident in the 90's when a train hit a stalled delivery truck and derailed.

If you're prepared to accept a tram as a railway then Trafford Park has some:

If you go back on GSV the Trafford park estates railway used to go through that roundabout to CPC / Cargill but has been disused since the early 90's. https://www.google.com/maps/@53.4666614 ... 312!8i6656IanRB wrote: ↑Mon Jan 11, 2021 10:57 If you're prepared to accept a tram as a railway then Trafford Park has some:
