To be honest, they could have probably got away without any renumbering at all. There are other examples of parallel two-ways roads carrying the same number - the A40 in Cheltenham, A370 in Bristol and, historically, the A47 included a full loop of the Norwich ring road.

Seems to be a typically busy street lined with large office buildings, shops and cafes. There's decent footfall throughout but it was not a welcoming place to be a pedestrian. I'm quite happy to see it made more pleasant to walk along.
Most pedestrians would use one of the side streets, e.g. Marylebone High Street, Great Portland Street etc as they're quieter and frankly more interesting!
