Roads with restrictions

Post by Gav »

We have the A9000 in Scotland that crosses the Forth Road bridge. Are there other examples of an A road that you cant use, and would be subject to fines if you did ?

You can use the A9000 - as a bus/taxi passenger/driver, on a moped, or as a pedestrian or a cyclist.

There's certainly parts of A Roads that you can't use in a private car, but I don't believe there's another where such restrictions apply to the whole length.

There are a number of categories

1) Roads that are tolled using ANPR and pre/post payment
A282 Dartford Crossing
A553 Mersey Gateway Bridge

There are others but they mostly have toll booths so you cannot but be aware of them.

2) Roads with weight restrictions
There are MANY roads with with weight limits that you may well be fined for using if driving an overweight vehicle

3) Roads with restricted traffic classes. The A19 Tees Flyover does not allow cyclists or pedestrians.

I assume you're meaning classified (A or B) roads which traffic generally can't use.

Isn't Princes Street still the A90?

Part of the B877 in Thurso is pedestrianised and completely closed to all vehicles (including pedal cycles).

From the SABRE Wiki: B877 :

According to the Highland Council's list of adopted roads, the B877 follows High Street and Shore Street in Thurso, connecting the A9 to the quay. The fact that the first part of this route - its only connection with another classified road - is pedestrianised seems to have been forgotten.

The road definitely had Class II status from at least the 1930s, when
