New A-road in York

On the latest OS maps, a new A-road has appeared in York!
Water End (running between Clifton and Holgate) is now the A1176, having previously been unclassified. I'll try to look at the weekend to see if the signs have been changed to include it.

For some reason some maps have shown water end as the A1176, I also think some DFT traffic counts listed it as a A Road but I can confirm on the ground noting has changed as i use it a few times a week and as far as I’m aware City of York council have no plans to change it.

I suspect this Road was to become A class when the Lendal bridge closure came into action, that was a trail but if the Lendal bridge closure became permanent then the inner ring road would have gone via water end which would have become A class, but of course the bridge closure was reversed so this never happened.

The A1176 is certainly not a new number, almost all of the A11xx numbers up to A1176 are currently used. Certainly it does not seem like a more modern addition in the same way as many of the A12xx numbers outwith the original Central London range.
