Friend of mine posted this on Facebook. Any idea what the A is referring to?

It’s Whiteladies Road, Clifton.

Could it be part of a route such as a diversion?
Are there any other A signs in the area

Should be a yellow sign for that? That’s all the info I have.

That leads me to believe it’s for the benefit of coach drivers and such.

All we know for sure is that the A is pointing in the direction of Whiteladies Road; the longabout where the sign is placed is just ahead of it.

Diversion route is my guess. There are folding panel signs at several places on the A roads that have a yellow side saying "follow (A)" or the like when the sign is folded over.

Edit: I'm pretty sure the trigger sign for the 'A' diversion is at the westbound exit of Anchor Road off the Jacobs Wells Road roundabout. Presumably so when that's closed, traffic trying to get out to Avonmouth or the motorway can be sent north up Jacobs Wells then Whiteladies, and either down Bridge Valley Road from the Downs or onwards to Cribbs Causeway perhaps?
