On looking about the Wiki I spotted that the original A687, running from Scotch Corner, did not last very long at all - just over a year.
Is this perhaps the shortest lived road number?

Re: Shortest lived road numbers
I'd have thought the B38 was the winner.

Re: Shortest lived road numbers
I must admit this crossed my mind, but I ruled it out as it's clearly a mistake - but then perhaps the A687 was too!
I think we can all be thankful it's gone.
Re: Shortest lived road numbers
I thought it was deliberate that the local council wanted to name the B38 the B38 as it was originally part of the A38. How the DfT let them I really dont know!

Re: Shortest lived road numbers
In the end, they didn't. But it now has an egregiously out-of-zone number anyway, B384. They could have had B438, but hey, who cares nowadays.

Re: Shortest lived road numbers
For what it's worth, the B384 number is unlikely to last much longer either. Work's taking place to remodel Selly Oak Triangle (a junction which easily qualified for Bad Junctions in its previous form), and the plan is to declassify the B384 (and reduce it to an S2 from the present S4) once the work has finished. For what it's worth, this plan seems dubious to me (why not change the spare road capacity into bus lanes? the buses really need it along there), but it's unlikely to change at this point.
Re: Shortest lived road numbers
The Selly Oak S4 is no way near wide enough for bus lanes in both directions, the lanes are about 2.75m wide tops. The logical step, given what Birmingham's policies are moving towards, would be to put a bus gate on the road somewhere, so all through traffic is sent around Aston Webb Boulevard instead.ais523 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 20, 2020 14:33 For what it's worth, the B384 number is unlikely to last much longer either.
