M6 J10 improvements
Plans have been released for a proposed upgrade for J10 of the M6.
http://roads.highways.gov.uk/projects/m ... provement/
Both options include building additional bridges to accommodate more lanes, so no radical redesign of the roundabout. Construction is due to start in spring 2019.

1b wins it for me.
Far superior geometry and therefore higher capacity and less lane drift.
My personal preference would be free flow left turn lanes off the M6 instead of the current double signalised arrangement, it doesn't seem clear if HE will provide these movements though.

Re: M6 J10 improvements
One of the proposals from the fantasy roads thread would really help remove traffic from the junction. I know it will require plenty of demolition but the benefits would make it worthwhile. I'm surprised it hasn't been given any thought until now.

M6 J10 Improvements
Works have started on this scheme to increase capacity by widening the roundabout and approaches.
I'm surprised to see HE are going to build wide bridges to allow a circular 4-lane roundabout, and demolish the old. See the illustrations on page 2 of the start of works newsletter.
60 limit currently on the M6; on the northbound side there is a roadworks sign with a "700 yards" plate below. Not seen one of those before !

Re: M6 J10 Improvements
If you're going to the effort of replacing bridges then at least provide some form of freeflow. This is the best option but a couple of hotels have appeared on the southeast side of the junction since this was drawn so this layout is no longer viable

Tonight, the northbound queue from j10 tailed back almost to the j9 on-ramp. Bad position, approaching on a long right-hand bend.

Re: M6 J10 Improvements
If the majority of traffic using that movement is heading west onto the A454 rather than heading east towards Walsall then a simple left turn filter lane at J10 looks like a cheap solution. I see the scheme as proposed will remove the existing freeflow left turn from Walsall to M6 south.mikehindsonevans wrote: ↑Fri Mar 06, 2020 22:39 Tonight, the northbound queue from j10 tailed back almost to the j9 on-ramp. Re: M6 J10 Improvements
Unbelievable. We have a large 5-arm fully-signalised roundabout, with a 2-lane circulatory, that isn't handling the traffic demand, as a GSJ on our busiest motorway - so what shall we do? Oh, let's build a larger 5-arm roundabout, with two new major structures, still fully signalised, even on the left-turn filter lanes, and ……. !
Yes, it will alleviate the queuing problem. But how blinkered can you get? Only in the UK could this be considered to be sensible.
I notice that the new bridges, despite carrying curved lanes, will actually be physically straight: interesting.

Blinkered would be thinking that building a GSJ here would be a sensible option both financially and environmentally.Peter Freeman wrote: ↑Sat Mar 07, 2020 04:24 Unbelievable. The same muppets who are proposing the same at M25 J10!Peter Freeman wrote: ↑Sat Mar 07, 2020 04:24 Unbelievable. If you’re going to go to all the hassle of building two new bridges, why not use them to carry the A454 over the M6? I don’t know the area at all but the A454 does seem to be a major route within the West Midlands.
As you say, quite unbelievable.

This is from the same people who plan to spend quarter of a billion pounds at M25 J10 replacing a three level stacked roundabout with a three level stacked roundabout.
There's already a GSJ here, and I don't think that's an unreasonable thing to find on a motorway

Re: M6 J10 Improvements
We remain stuck with the problem that Highways England think the answer to all motorway problems are more lanes on the motorway and not sorting out junctions like this.
Striking the balance between reducing the queues and just encouraging everyone to drive is tricky though. Another thing I don't think Highways England are capable of doing looking at how their schemes are either ultra massive Lower Thames Crossing style or utterly nonsense achieve nothing but wider bridges like this.

Re: M6 J10 Improvements
We really need transport planners from Melbourne to sort out our mess. They obviously can do things properly.
I would suggest a starting point would be to introduce filter lanes for all the left turns. Close the B4464 and then the Black Country Route could freeflow onto the M6 north.

Re: M6 J10 Improvements
Add an eastbound onslip at Bentley Rd N. Then as Truvelo says remove the B4464 from J10 and freeflow all left turns. It really is a disgraceful waste of public money that they're removing the existing freeflow left turn.
Re: M6 J10 Improvements
Just misguided. Although HE don't care if the local network jams up as long as their mainlines flow better.
That isn't how this is supposed to work.
