Rare Haldon Hill Diversion

Post by SteveA30 »

This seemed so rare and unlikely, it wasn't even on my To Do list. I've only known it to happen once before, although in the 48 years since it was bypassed I'm sure it must have happened a few times in the pre-internet pre real time news era. The old A38 down Haldon Hill, from the racecourse to Splatford Split. Uphill diversions are impossible, as it is closed off at the top but, still a 2 way road. It was an S2/1 and was even relined as that in the 90's. Now an S2 with cycle lane, which was used while I was there.

The car can just be made out up the bank, with the crane reaching out for it.

While on my way there, came reports of a vehicle fire just after the old A38 joined the A380, causing a lane closure there, leading to tailbacks up Telegraph Hill as well.

Got caught in that myself yesterday, Google suggested coming off at the petrol station before the hill and back round onto the A38 where the new Mcdonnalds is being built. Seemed to be roadworks there though so was stopped for about 10 mins, hard to tell if we gained or lost anything as when we got to the split, traffic from the A380 seemed to be flowing.
