A68 Fala Dam - Road Collapsed

Post by jabbaboy »

Haven't seen anyone mention this and some might be interested - happened this morning. Looks like it could be shut awhile, diversion via Galashiels and the A7.

It's quite impressive that with so little article text they were padding it out with

My preferred route from Tyneside to Edinburgh is A697, so I suspect I'd be using B6362 to cut across through lauder and Stow rather than go via Galashiels even though (on paper) that diversion only adds 20min onto the 2h20 journey

A quicker diversion is via A6093/B6371/B6368 though understandably they're not sending traffic that way.

Bear SE Scotland's Twitter feed reports that repairs are now under way at Fala Dam. Rocks will be used to build up a new embankment.

They've wasted no time in starting work! Quite a hefty task ahead, though - something in the region of 5,000 tonnes of rock is needed, I believe.

BEAR SE Scotland plan to have repairs completed and the road reopened by early-September, depending on the weather.

Went up the A68 a couple of weeks ago for a holiday in Scotland, the wife insisted on a photo at Carter Bar so followed the diversion up the A7, not keen, wish I'd continued up the A68 and did the aforementioned local diversion.

At least the roads were empty except for an idiot in a BMW X5 who insisted on tailgating rather than passing, they're definitely wallowy on the bends :D

The damaged embankment has been rebuilt, with work about to commence on relaying the carriageway. If all goes to plan it should reopen to traffic next week.

The road reopened at 5.20 this morning. Plenty of midnight oil being burned here!

I see from that piece it’s an important commuter route from the south of the country [ie Scotland]. I guess its strategic role as a preferred route from Tyneside to Edinburgh must be a sideshow...

I’m surprised by various references to the problem being AT Fala Dam, isn’t this actually Telford’s bypass OF Fala Dam?
